For example, one claim recites a method including: receiving data representing media content, the media content is to be rendered to an audience assembled at a location; and then encoding tracing information in the data utilizing at least a programmed electronic processor, said encoding alters at least some portions of the data to hide the tracing information in the data, the tracing information is associated with a time and location of rendering the media content to the audience assembled at the location, the tracing information will permit an illicitly captured version of the rendered media content to be traced back to the time and location of the rendering. The present invention relates to steganographically hiding messages in media signals such as video and audio signals. In one implementation, a method of decoding an encoded media signal to extract a plural-bit auxiliary signal therefrom is provided. The media signal includes a plurality of intervals, with the plural-bit auxiliary signal being steganographically encoded in at least some of the intervals. Once encoded in the media signal the plural-bit auxiliary signal is generally imperceptible to a human observer of the encoded media signal. The encoding includes subtle changes to at least some portions of the media signal to thereby represent the plural-bit auxiliary signal. The method includes receiving the encoded media signal; and decoding the received encoded media signal to extract the plural-bit auxiliary signal therefrom. The decoding analyzes a plurality of intervals of the media signal with greater or lesser confidence in the extracted multi-bit auxiliary data signal being obtained by processing more or less intervals of the encoded media signal, respectively.

A decoder process reads a message steganographically encoded in a composite signal. One decoding process operates on a potentially modified version of the composite signal. Yet another decoding process analyzes the composite signal to gather evidence of characteristics associated with the message symbols in the message. Based on the evidence, it estimates message symbols. It compares the estimated message symbols with one or more message symbols known to be included in the message to assess whether the composite signal has a valid message.

The invention provides a method and apparatus for embedding hidden data in digital images created from scanning developed photographic film. A film development system develops exposed photographic film to produce developed photographic film. A scanner then scans the developed film to produce a digital image. Film properties are extracted from the developed film, such as the dimensions of the image and/or the graininess or other attributes associated with the image on the film. These properties are stored in memory of a programmed computer system, which includes a digital watermark encoder for embedding information in digital images. The digital watermark encoder reads the film properties and possibly other input parameters supplied by a user, and in response, embeds associated information into the digital image. The embedding process modifies pixel values of the digital image to embed the associated information. Preferably, the modifications to the pixel values are slight so that they do not substantially alter the quality of the digital image. The digital image may be printed, in which case, the embedded information is invisible in the printed image. The digital image may also be stored in a portable storage device, such as a CD, or transmitted electronically over a network, such as the Internet. A variety of data may be embedded in the image, including authentication information, sound data, film speed, exposure information, etc.
