A magnetic recording medium in sheet or tape form comprises a thin flexible backing and a firmly attached coating of a uniform dispersion of about two parts of ferromagnetic particles in one part of a binder comprising a flexible and abrasion-resistant blend of a rubbery butadiene-acrylonitrile polymer soluble in methyl isobutyl ketone and a high molecular weight vinyl polymer other than a butadieneacrylonitrile polymer which is also soluble in methyl isobutyl ketone, the Taber abrasion resistance value of the product being at least 300 revolutions per mil. The method of determining the abrasion resistance value is described. In examples (1) a cellulose acetate film is prime-coated with a solution in methyl isobutyl ketone of a blend of rubbery butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer and a compatible spiritsoluble heat reactive phenol-aldehyde resin, a partially reacted condensation product of one mol. of phenol, 0.25 mol. of acetaldehyde and 0.95 mol. of formaldehyde being suitable; it is then coated with a solution in methyl-isobutyl ketone of four parts of a copolymer of 90 parts of vinyl chloride and 10 parts of vinyl acetate, a small amount of an organic lead stabilizer such as lead stearate or phthalate and one part of a rubbery copolymer of 65 parts of butadiene-1,3 and 35 parts of acrylonitrile, to which two parts of a magnetic red iron oxide powder in which the particles are of a "chunky" character, is added, the solvent being volatilized and the tape passed twice through a supercalender; (2) two parts of acicular magnetic iron oxide powder dispersed in one part of a 60 : 40 blend of the vinyl copolymer and rubbery polymer used in the preceding example, is used for coating a similarly pre-coated backing; (3) thin rope-fibre tissue paper is saturated with a solution in methyl isobutyl ketone of a 90 : 10 vinyl chloride - vinyl acetate copolymer, dioctyl phthalate and a stabilizer, to which titanium dioxide pigment is added; it is then coated with the ...

Film carriers for optical or acoustic purposes (e.g. optical or magnetic sound film carriers) are made by applying at least the carrier substance by electrostatic spraying on to a smooth base and stripping it therefrom when dry. A metal strip may be used in known manner as base, electrically-charged for the spray process. The material to be applied by spraying may be electrostatically charged, e.g. by means of known spray electrodes, before spraying, and the material which is to be coated by subjection to spraying may be passed over a flat electrode or laid on such an electrode and sprayed. The total solids in the coating composition is less than or equal to about 10 weight %, and the weight ratio of the binder to the complex is at least about 1:1. Under these formulation conditions, the polyaniline protonic counter-ion complex is solubilized, rather than being in dispersed form, and is readily applied to form a thin, relatively transparent, electrically conductive film. Antistatic layers of photographic elements can be prepared in this manner.

This invention describes a process for improvements in security for personal identification documents, particularly for machine-readable passports. An image of a personal identifier of a holder of the document is stored as a highly-compressed digital image in a magnetic medium dispersed invisibly within the material of a visible print forming part of the document or within the body of the document itself. The document is then scanned magnetically at the place where identification is required and the stored image decompressed and displayed. This provides confirmation that the holder of the document is the person shown on the visible image, that the document has not been tampered with, and by checking the image code against a database, that the document was originated by the proper authority.

The camera-dedicated tracks lie along the edges of the film between the film perforations. Each track begins and ends within a single frame, and is divided into a plurality of fields. The spatial relationship between the start location of the tracks associated with each film frame and the corresponding perforation determines the spatial relationship between the magnetic heads and the perforation sensor in the photofinishing apparatus.

The total solids in the coating composition is less than or equal to about 10 weight %, and the weight ratio of the binder to the complex is at least about 1:1. Under these formulation conditions, the polyaniline protonic counter-ion complex is solubilized, rather than being in dispersed form, and is readily applied to form a thin, relatively transparent, electrically conductive film. Antistatic layers of photographic elements can be prepared in this manner.
