An optical recording medium is provided in which a recording layer contains a salt-forming dye between an ion of an azo metal complex of the following formula (I) and an ion of a cyanine dye of the following formula (II), having a complex index of refraction in the wavelength region of recording light and/or reading light whose imaginary part k is up to 0.20, or at least one of azo oxovanadium metal complexes having an azo compound of the following formula (III) as a ligand and metal complexes having azo compounds of the following formulae (IV) and (V) as a ligand. Recording and reading can be carried out at a conventional wavelength or a short wavelength of about 630-690 nm or both. (A-(~N-B)m ~ M1 (I) (see formula II) A-N=N-B (III) (see formula IV) (see formula V) In formulae (I) and (III), A is an aromatic ring group having an active hydrogen-bearing group at a position adjacent to the diazo group or a nitrogenous heteroaromatic ring group having an oxovanadium-coordinatable nitrogen atom at a position adjacent to the carbon atom in the ring attached to the diazo group, and B is an aromatic ring group having an active hydrogen-bearing group at a position adjacent to the diazo group. The present invention provides a thermoplastic composition excellent in heat resistance and water resistance which includes a thermoplastic saturated norbornene polymer which has a number-average molecular weight (Mn) of 50,000-500,000 and a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 100,000-2,000,000 which are measured by high performance liquid chromatography, and a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of 2.2 or more, and a volatile content of at most 0.3% by weight higher. The method includes forming in a sputtering chamber on the substrate surface a first sublayer of a predetermined thickness by sputtering at least two elements having Ge and Te, or alloys thereof, in a flowing environment of a hydrocarbon gas and an inert gas wherein the flow rate of the hydrocarbon gas is selected relative to the flow rate of the inert gas to provide the first sublayer with an elemental R min reflectivity in the range of 40-60% and forming in the sputtering chamber on the first sublayer a second sublayer of a predetermined thickness by sputtering at least two elements having Ge and Te, or alloys thereof, in a flowing environment of hydrocarbon gas and the inert gas, with the flow rate of the hydrocarbon gas being selected to be greater than when forming the first sublayer so that the elemental R min reflectivity of the second layer is in the range of about 70-85%. The method further includes forming a reflecting layer on the second sublayer and selecting the thicknesses of the first and second sublayers, and the reflecting layer such that the reflectivity of the recording element is about or greater than 70% for a laser wavelength of about 780 nm.
