Production of flat cable with the electricl conductor attached to a self-adhesive backing strip. The conductor (3) is first applied to the adhesive layer (2) of a sticky protective foil (1). This is followed by convering this surface with an auxiliary foil (5), a section of which is pulled off the protective foil and the conductor to leave the latter exposed. The exposed sections are then covered by a self-adhesive assembly foil. The adhesive layer of this foil grips the conductor more strongly than its adhesive layer (2) grips the protective foil but less strongly than the adhesive layer (2) remaining on the conductor after removing the auxiliary foil grips the fixing surface.

The device produces pre-shaped cables by bringing together the cable's insulated strands in their required positions with respect to one another, and a support tape. Both the strands' insulating sleeves and the tape are made of a natural or synthetic rubber that can be vulcanized. The strands are fused to the tape by pressing tape and strands together and heating. The cable so formed is then subjected to a vulcanising process. The device consists of a trolley that runs along the laid-out strands and presses the heated support tape down onto them by means of a roller.

A flexible wiring board, where a wire rod formed of a conventional conductor and a thread-like material are stitched into a film-like substrate and wiring is formed of the wire rod, is formed of an insulating thread-like material more flexible than the wire rod, and can be stitched into a film-like substrate easily, whereby the wire rod is not broken easily. The flexible wiring board poses difficulties because it requires a large number of production steps due to indispensable stitching into a film-like substrate. The problem is solved by a wiring board which uses such a method that a photosensitive agent of an insulator (2) is exposed to and developed on conductors (1) arranged in parallel, an opening (3) for external conductive connection is formed, and then a wiring pattern is formed.

An electrical ribbon cable comprises a plurality of conductors arranged side-by-side wherein adjacent conductors are insulated from each other by an insulating layer containing PTFE. Adjacent conductors are spaced apart not greater than three times the thickness of the insulation. In one embodiment (Fig 4) conductors (20) with insulation (21) are compressed side-by-side and heated to bond the insulation. Alternatively (Fig 7) uninsulated conductors (50) have a serpentine insulation layer (51) to separate them and insulating layers (52, 53) above and below the conductors. In other embodiments, spaced insulated conductors (60, 61) are thermally bonded to an insulating layer (62 Fig 8), or serpentine insulation (13, 32, 40) is woven between adjacent or every other pair of insulated conductors (Figs 1, 3, 5, & 6) with or without a supporting insulating layer (14, 43). A method for assembling a multiconductor and support includes intermittently moving several conductive elements in parallel spaced relation and intermittently moving a support means in a plane parallel to the conductive elements. A second electrode (15) can be brought to and moved away from the first, and grips a support sheet (16) against the sheath of the conductor (13) at a point midway between the points on the sheath with which the first electrode is in contact. A radio frequency voltage is applied to the electrodes. The shortest paths from the wire to the support band of the first electrode to the second electrode do not cross the wire core. The radio frequency source applied to the electrodes heats the sheath and the support band and produces a weld at their interface.

The wiring and ribbon are integrated by then pouring over them a special composition (35) from a heated reservoir (34) at a temp. of about 200 deg. C. The strip speed is up to 200 m/min.

The varnish (4) need not completely surround the conductors (Fig. 2, not shown). The conductors may be sandwiched between two sheets. In connecting the cable to, e.g. a circuit board 29, Fig. 4, having a row of pre-tinned terminals 28 with the same pitch as the cable conductors, cable 1 is laid over the terminals and heat is applied from the back of the cable by a soldering iron 30 having a wide bit 31, which melts the plastics backing and solders the wires to the terminals. In an apparatus for manufacurring the cable (Fig. 3, not shown) a sheet of the plastics used for the backing is wrapped around a drum and one or more conductors are passed through a bath of polyurethane varnish and wound helically on the drum. The plastics sheet may then be slit as required to obtain the tape cable.
