Embodiments of an apparatus that includes a substrate and an inductor residing in the substrate are disclosed. In one embodiment, the inductor is formed as a conductive path that extends from a first terminal to a second terminal. The conductive path has a shape corresponding to a two-dimensional (2D) lobe laid over a three-dimensional (3D) volume. Since the shape of the conductive path corresponds to the 2D lobe laid over a 3D volume, the magnetic field generated by the inductor has magnetic field lines that are predominately destructive outside the inductor and magnetic field lines that are predominately constructive inside the inductor. In this manner, the inductor can maintain a high quality (Q) factor while being placed close to other components.

The high frequency transformer generates a high output voltage by the diode split method of a subdivided output winding. The deleterious high impedance of such a winding is reduced by detuning the individual output windings so that their conducting states do not wholly coincide. The output winding can be tuned to the mean of a harmonic of the impulses applied to the primary winding. The tuning can be achieved by matching the secondary to the primary to control stray capacitance.

The primary and secondary leakage self-inductance is typically chosen to give a cut-off between 100 kHz and 500 kHz with a value between 0.4 mH and 0.6 mH. The transformer comprises a plastic body (14) with a cylindrical or prismatic central passage through which passes the core (13). It has collars (16-21) perpendicular to the passage axis and spaced out to define the annular grooves of the sections.
