Buttons can be removably coupled to the cable connectors, and can also include dynamic displays thereupon. Other gaming machine dynamic displays can also be provided. Separate dynamic display controllers can be provided to control dynamic displays directly to alleviate processing burdens on the master gaming controller.

These symbols are then illuminated by the actuating elements.

Embodiments of a backlit keyboard assembly are described. A keycap assembly is mounted into a case web having intersecting ribs. A flange, which can be angled, is on the bottom perimeter of the keycap and a correspondingly shaped flange is on each rib of the case web. In a manufacturing method of a push-button switch, a key-top end of a pressing element 25 is inserted into a lower-mold recess for the pressing element, which is provided in a surface of a lower mold. A reinforcing plate 28 is placed in the lower mold so that the pressing element 25 extends through a plate through hole of the reinforcing plate 28. An upper mold and the lower mold are moved toward each other so as to insert the other end of the pressing element 25 into an upper-mold recess for the pressing element, which is provided in a lower surface of the upper mold. A liquid silicone rubber 27, which contains a component that does not adhere to the upper and lower molds but adheres to the pressing element 25, is introduced into a cavity. After the upper and lower molds are pressed and held at a predetermined temperature for a predetermined time, the upper and lower molds are opened to remove a molded product in which an intermediate portion in an axial direction of the pressing element 25 is supported in the plate through hole by the silicone rubber 27. A back surface of a key top 26 is attached to the key-top end of the pressing element 25 in the molded product. Thus, the pressing element and the elastic member are easily and reliably integrally molded by using the elastic member, and durability of the push-button switch is improved.

An input assembly for a human interface device such as a keyboard comprises a first membrane ( 20 ) and second membrane ( 22 ) each having an electrical circuit provided on a surface thereof. The first and second ( 20 )( 22 ) membranes are arranged such that the electrical circuits of each membrane are facing each other. Means ( 24 ) is provided for permitting selective electrical connection between the electrical circuits of the first and second membranes ( 20 )( 22 ). An electrical connector ( 42 ) is connected to the electrical circuit of one or both of the first or second membranes ( 20 )( 22 ) and comprises a connection portion configured for connection to a further electrical component. Sealing means is provided which is configured to seal the membrane assembly to a further surface to form a sealed unit which seals and encapsulates both the electrical circuits of the membrane assembly and the connection portion of the electrical connector ( 42 ).

A process is provided for characterizing a tactile response of a first mechanical actuator (e.g., button) based on a back off distance. The first mechanical actuator may include a plunger, a dome-shaped flexible membrane, and an electrical contact, all aligned with each other so that a contact signal is generated when the flexible membrane touches the contact. The plunger can be moved a first distance towards the contact until the contact signal is generated at a contact point. Then the plunger can be backed off a second distance from the contact point. This second distance may be called the “back off distance”. The particular feel of the first mechanical actuator can then be correlated to a particular back off distance. This process can be repeated a number of times to classify a number of different “feels” for the first mechanical actuator based on a number of different back off distances.

An electronic device comprises a housing, a printed circuit board (PCB) received in the housing, and a key membrane covered on the PCB. The housing comprises a key portion with a plurality of keys. The key membrane comprises a first insulating layer and a second insulating layer covered by the first insulating layer. The second insulating layer is mounted on the PCB and defines a plurality of through holes. The through holes correspond to the plurality of keys in a one-to-one relationship. When one of the plurality of keys is being pressed, a part of the first insulating layer corresponding to the pressed key is deformed and establishes the electrical connection with the PCB, thus the PCB is actuated to generate a corresponding control signal.

A sensing system with four projected capacitance sensing electrode pairs which allows navigation of a two dimensional space associated with a mobile terminal. Buttons within the space can be selected by mechanical switches that provide haptic feedback. Operation of the switches is detected capacitively or directly. The capacitive coupling between a touch surface and the electrodes is improved by the use of suitable material. Force-dependent navigational or selection input of a user can be detected. Capacitive sensing track pad structures are integrated into traditional tactile keyboards or keypads.
