A switch having a rocking actuator 9 and an apertured cover plate 7 is provided with an operating member in the form of a rectangular plate 10 having a generally flat surface which overlies and extends beyond the cover plate. A flanged rim 11 on the plate 10 encircles the cover plate 7. The plate 10 may be centrally pivoted on a pin 12 and have two projections 13 to urge the actuator 9 in respective directions. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the plate 10 is pivoted near one edge by pins (14) and the projection nearer the pivot axis is replaced by a leaf spring (15), thus providing a retractive action. Instead of pivot pins the plate 10 may have an inturned flange (16, Fig. 3, not shown) on the rim 11 which fits loosely behind a lip on the cover plate 7 such that the plate 10 is rockable and detachable. A small lamp (39, Figs. 5, 6 and 7, not shown) may be carried in a slot in the switch actuator to indicate its condition, or for location in the dark, and the plate 10 may have a thinner portion (43, Fig. 8, not shown) serving as a window.

Rocker buttons for devices such as automotive audio systems are mounted in escutcheons of the audio systems by using rocker frame members. Light dams, unitary with the rocker frame members shield LEDs used to illuminate indicia in the rocker buttons so that the light is not transmitted through gaps between the rocker buttons and the edges of openings through the escutcheons which receive the rocker buttons. Trunions extend laterally from the rocker buttons and are received within bearings formed by grooves in the escutcheons. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the rocker frames retain trunions in the bearings and in accordance with another embodiment of the invention peripheral display lenses overlie the trunions to hold the trunions in the bearings.
