The invention relates to a method for capping an electric lamp which has a lamp cap with at least one thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21). In particular, the invention relates to a method for cementless capping of a compact fluorescent lamp. According to the invention, the lamp vessel (1) is sealed with the aid of the thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21) by heating sections (101, 102) of the lamp vessel (1) above the softening point and preferably above the melting point of the thermoplastic, and introducing them into constricted cutouts (210) in the thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21). The heated lamp vessel sections (101, 102) soften or melt and displace the synthetic material in the region of the constricted cutouts (210). The lamp vessel (1) is embedded in the set synthetic in a self-closed fashion after the polymer melt has been allowed to set.

[Also in Group XI] A cap or base for the sealed bulb or envelope of an electric lamp, discharge tube or the like is formed with a cylindrical or slightly conical rim which seats on and fits closely to a correspondingly shaped part of the bulb neck with the interposition of a thin layer of silicone resin which hardens from the liquid condition and is capable of withstanding temperatures of 200‹ C. and above. The bulb neck and the surrounding part of the cap or base may -have an inclination of about 5 degrees to the vertical. In the example a thin adhesive layer 4 of a silicone resin is interposed between the part 2 of the neck of a bulb 1 and the adjacent part 3 of the cap by applying it to either or both surfaces before they are joined. The parts may then be heated to about 180‹ to 200‹ C. to connect them sufficiently to withstand normal service conditions, the final hardening of the silicone resin being effected by the temperatures attained in the operation of the lamp. As shown, one leading-in wire 5 is clamped between the rim of the cap and the neck of the bulb.

This invention consists of an improved design and assembly process the for manufacture of a single ended quartz (SEQ) lamp for projection applications. The lamp (A) includes a hermetically sealed envelope (10) which houses a filament (15). A ceramic base (12) receives the envelope in a receiving slot (26). Cement fill in the slot, around the hermetic seal, bonds the envelope to the base. Ends (18,20) of the filament extend into the seal region (22) and are electrically connected to a power source by three-part leads (14,16). This invention consists of a much simpler two-pin prefocus ceramic base SEQ lamp design that is made with fewer parts and is much easier and faster to assemble to enable much reduced labor and cost. Also, the ceramic base is smaller and exposes more of the quartz lamp seal to the surroundings to enable more effective cooling during lamp operation to prevent lamp failures from overheated seals. Also, the ceramic base is designed for quick assembly with the coil correctly focused to the base.

Discharge lamp with a base and method and fixture for manufacturing the same

A discharge lamp (1) is disclosed, which comprises a discharge vessel (2) sealed in a tubular envelope (4). The lamp (1) has a lamp base (5) covering an end part of the envelope (4), and fixing means for providing a substantially rigid fixing of the envelope (4) to the lamp base (5). The fixing means comprises a metal clamp ring (6), which surrounds a part of the envelope (4) external to the lamp base (5). A melt plastic lining (7) is provided between the clamp ring (6) and the envelope (4). The melt plastic lining (7) substantially completely fills a space between the envelope (4) and the clamp ring (6). A method is also provided for manufacturing a discharge lamp (1) as above. The method comprises the steps of providing a space between the clamp ring (6) and the envelope (4), and providing a hot-melt plastic lining (7) in the space between the clamp ring (6) and the envelope (4). Subsequently, the plastic lining (7) is melted, and substantially completely fills the space between the clamp ring (6) and the envelope (4), establishing a tight and stable mechanical connection between the clamp ring (6) and the envelope (7).

According to the invention, the lamp vessel (1) is sealed with the aid of the thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21) by heating sections (101, 102) of the lamp vessel (1) above the softening point and preferably above the melting point of the thermoplastic, and introducing them into constricted cutouts (210) in the thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21). The heated lamp vessel sections (101, 102) soften or melt and displace the synthetic material in the region of the constricted cutouts (210). The lamp vessel (1) is embedded in the set synthetic in a self-closed fashion after the polymer melt has been allowed to set.

A foamable copolymer based coupling is provided for securely affixing a light emitting glass lamp in a metal base to form a lamp assembly. The copolymer is preferably selected from ethylene vinyl acetate, ethylene methyl acrylate, and combinations thereof. The foamable coupling may be placed around one end of the glass lamp or in the lamp base before the lamp and base are matingly engaged. The assembled lamp is then heated to a temperature, which causes the foamable coupling to expand and securely affix the lamp in the base.
