The object is to build a starting circuit for very large cage type induction motors without using a large number of controlling semiconductors. In the starting mode the motor (9) is connected to an intermediate busbar (2) which is in turn connected to the mains (1) through a reactor with an air gap core (3) and two mutually coupled windings (4, 5). One winding (4) is in series between supply and motor whilst the other can be short circuited by two anti-parallel connected phase controlled thyristors (6). The series reactor winding (4) is designed to absorb about 25% of the vailable voltage when the other winding is open circuit. As the motor runs up the second winding is progressively short circuited for longer periods until the short circuit reactance is reached. At this point, the motor can be switched (10) directly onto the supply (1) and the starting circuits isolated (7, 8).

A control voltage, which is dependent on an actual value and a required value, is supplied through a regulator (21) to the controllable rectifiers which are located in the winding circuits of the three-phase motor. The actual value is supplied by an actual-value sensor (20) which is coupled to the drive shaft of the motor, and the required value is supplied by a required-value transmitter (26). The required-value transmitter produces the required value by integrating an adjustable input signal, additionally differentiating the input signal, by means of a rounding device (25), for smooth acceleration and braking of the rotation speed, and the differentiated input signal being included in the integration process with opposite polarity to the original input signal. Once the differentiation process has been completed, the required value rises or falls with an adjustable gradient until a maximum or minimum value is reached. This method is particularly suitable for controlling the drive motor of a passenger lift.

The system comprises an electrical connection path for connecting an electrical input of the AC motor to a first phase of alternating current from an electric power supply. The Triac is connected into one phase only of the supply to the motor which is governed by a normal circuit breaker. The angle of trip of the Triac can be manually or automatically controlled by a potentiometer. When the motor is first switched on with two phases only connected, the motor is stationary but as the controlled Triac opens the third phase is progressively fed. The Triac may be switched out of circuit when the operating speed has been achieved. This control is limited to motor of 1 HP or less but overcomes the difficulties of small resistor control units especially when the run-up time of the motor is appreciable.

During starting, the controlling voltage (1) exhibits a falling characteristic. Firing pulses (3) are applied in synchronism with the supply wave-form, causing the effective motor terminal voltage to rise steadily from zero. At a preset control voltage threshold, asynchronous pulses replace the synchronous; when a second threshold is reached the controller closes the shunt contactor. Asynchronous pulses continue to be applied during the period, which then begins, of normal running. At shut-down, the contactor is opened and the reverse pulse sequence is applied during deceleration.

A control system for a three-phase motor has two triac switches connected in respective supply lines to the motor. Both switches are initially closed so that power is supplied to the motor on all three lines. After a predetermined time, when the motor has reached its operating speed, one switch is opened by a logic unit so that single phase power is supplied to the motor on two lines. One of the switches is subsequently periodically closed for short intervals, and the other switch is periodically opened for short intervals under control of a monostable unit, so as to produce hunting of the motor. Hunting of the motor is detected by a speed monitor responsive to the counter EMF of the motor. The system has a phase detector responsive to the phase relationship between signals on the supply lines which prevents the switches being closed if there is not the desired phase relationship between the signals.

A soft start control for a delta-connected motor or an ungrounded Y-connected (star-connected) motor or the like polyphase system. To reduce the accelerating torque of a polyphase motor and thereby obtain a soft start characteristic that reduces stress and strain on the driven parts until normal running speed is reached, a gated A.C. switching device such as a triac is used in the power lines of the polyphase A.C. source. A simple time delay firing circuit connected across each triac controls the latter so that current flow is interrupted in each of the phases for a predetermined period of time during each half-cycle in repetitive sequence, the net effect being to reduce the effective voltage applied to the motor. After a predetermined time of reduced voltage acceleration sufficient to bring the motor up to or near running speed, a timer controls the firing circuit to apply full line voltage to the motor.

Alpha control of the thyristor switches (22a-22c) is utilized to start the AC induction motor (12) and bring the AC induction motor (12) to near full operating speed. As the AC induction motor nears full operating speed, gamma control of the thyristor switches (22a-22c) is utilized to bring the AC induction motor (12) to full operating speed. With the AC induction motor (12) at full operating speed, bypass contactors (24a-24c), in parallel across corresponding thyristor switches (22a-22c), are closed and the AC induction motor (12) operates in a conventional manner.

A control system for a three-phase motor has two triac switches connected in respective supply lines to the motor. Both switches are initially closed so that power is supplied to the motor on all three lines. After a predetermined time, when the motor has reached its operating speed, one switch is opened by a logic unit so that single phase power is supplied to the motor on two lines. One of the switches is subsequently periodically closed for short intervals, and the other switch is periodically opened for short intervals under control of a monostable unit, so as to produce hunting of the motor. Hunting of the motor is detected by a speed monitor responsive to the counter EMF of the motor. The system has a phase detector responsive to the phase relationship between signals on the supply lines which prevents the switches being closed if there is not the desired phase relationship between the signals.

A soft starter of asynchronous motor is composed of a three-phase thyristor voltage regulation circuit, current detection circuit, controller, voltage zero crossing detection circuit and a six-channel trigger pulse generator. The inputend of the three-phase thyristor voltage regulating circuit isconnected to the external power grid, and its output end is directly connected to the starter terminal of the motor. The current detection circuit compares the actual current signal detected by the motor side with the preset maximum current value of the motor, and outputs the signal to the controller. The controller calculates and processes the output control signal. The voltage zero-crossing detection circuit collects the voltage signal from the grid line voltage as the synchronous voltage signal, and then inputs the control signal and the synchronous voltage signal into the six-channel trigger pulse generatorto generate a trigger pulse. The trigger pulse controls thethree phase thyristor voltage regulator circuit to control the input voltage of the motor in real time. Method and controlling the starting of an AC induction motor with closed loop current control

A method is provided for controlling a three-phase, AC induction motor. Each phase of the AC induction motor is connected to an AC input source by a thyristor switch and a bypass contactor connected in parallel in order to provide voltage and current to the AC induction motor. The method includes the steps of sequentially firing pairs of thyristor switches at a predetermined initial gamma firing angle. A new gamma firing angle is calculated which is dependant upon the initial gamma firing angle. Thereafter, pairs of thyristor switches are fired at the new gamma firing angle. The new gamma firing angle is provided as the initial gamma firing angle and a new gamma firing angle is calculated. The process is repeated until the AC induction motor reaches its full operating speed.
