In this embodiment the precoding matrix comprises at least two sub-matrices (G, M) each associated with a different one of the first and second pairs of antennas. The second embodiment, which is claimed, is concerned with an OFDM-MIMO application in which a series of transformations are applied to the precoding matrix (equation 6). The transformations include a first carrier index dependent complex rotation α(n, t) of the signal destined for one of the antenna pairs, a real 2x2 rotation matrix, and a second carrier index dependent complex rotation β(n, t) (equation 5). A multi-antenna codebook selection modulation method for solving weak scattering is provided by the present invention. The method obtains higher diversity gain from a combination of multi-antenna codebook pre-coding and a rotation modulation solution by designing a new codebook selection rule. The present invention employs a design solution of designing a higher-order modulation diversity and space interleaver to obtain the higher diversity gain. In addition, the number of transmission antennas and the number of rotation modulation dimension can be set arbitrarily. However, the present invention takes the number Nt of transmission antennas to be equal to the number D of rotation modulation dimension in order to obtain higher diversity gain. In this way, the method evenly disperses signals of each dimension after D-dimensional rotation to each antenna through space interleaving technique, so that the signals of each dimension suffer different fading, thus enabling space diversity gain. With the present invention, the data of a transmitting end are pre-coded by using a channel value estimated for an ideal channel. 1. The disclosed embodiments relate to a system that facilitates antenna selection and pilot reduction in a multi-antenna system. During operation, in response to an activating event, the system performs a full pilot transmission by transmitting pilot signals through all available transmit antennas at a base station. The system then determines the selected subset of transmit antennas by receiving lists of selected antennas from mobile stations associated with preferred users, wherein a given mobile station selects a list of antennas in response to pilot signals received during the full pilot transmission. The system then combines the received lists to produce the selected subset, wherein the selected subset includes all antennas which appear in the received lists of selected antennas. Next, during normal system operation, the system periodically performs a selected pilot transmission by transmitting pilot signals through a selected subset of the available transmit antennas.
