Apparatus and method for encoding and transmitting feedback information from a first network node to a second network node in a multi-carrier wireless telecommunications network. The first network node is operable to receive signals from the second network node on two or more reception carriers and transmit data to the second network node on one or more transmission carriers. Each reception carrier being transmitted within an associated a radio band. The method comprises the steps of: (i) monitoring for a signal on at least two of the reception carriers; (ii) generating feedback information for at least two of the reception carriers based upon received signals; (iii) grouping the feedback information for reception carriers being transmitted within the same radio band; and encoding said grouped feedback information for two or more reception carriers being transmitted within the same radio band; and iv) transmitting the encoded feedback information to the second network node on one or more transmission carriers.

According to the method, the user equipment transmits UCI through a PUSCH (physical uplink shared channel) of a primary cell in a subframe that has PUSCH transmission of the primary cell; and if the subframe that does not have the PUSCH transmission of the primary cell has PUSCH transmission of at least one secondary cell, the user equipment transmits the UCI through the PUSCH of one of the at least one secondary cell. In this case, more than one serving cell is set up in the user equipment; simultaneous transmission of PUSCH and PUCCH (physical uplink control channel), with PUSCH being a data channel and PUCCH being a control channel, is not set up in the serving cells; and each of the serving cells includes the primary cell and the at least one secondary cell.

A method of sounding and feedback with channel quality information and reduced overhead is provided. A receiving station receives a sounding signal transmitted from an access point over multiple sub-channels of a wide channel in a wireless network. The receiving station detects channel quality based on the received sounding signal for each sub-channel. The receiving station then performs channel estimation based on the received sounding signal and thereby determining feedback information. Finally, the receiving station transmits a feedback message to the access point, the feedback message contains NULL feedback information, reduced feedback information, or channel integrity/quality indicators based on the channel quality information for each sub-channel. Based on the feedback message, the access point may repeat the sounding process, narrow the transmission bandwidth, or select only stations who have indicated uncorrupted channel sounding for MU-MMO transmission.
