Secondly, the number of pilots may be chosen to be less than that required by the worst case channel so that the data rate is maximized for a large portion of the channels in use. Thirdly, the data packet may be constructed such that the demodulation mode employed for data payload encoding is signaled in the first portion of the data packet often referred to as the PHY Header. The PHY Header is always transmitted as a coherent modulation including data and pilot tones.

The transceivers communicating signals affected by the suspended vectoring operations are also configured to adjust their constellation density profiles, thereby reducing their data rates, to accommodate the increased noise level resulting from the loss of vectoring. Systems and methods for routing protocols for power line communications (PLC) are described. In some embodiments, a method performed by a PLC device, such as a PLC meter, may include selecting one or more transmit sub-bands on which to transmit frames, where the transmit sub-bands comprise groups of six carrier frequencies. The PLC device then generates a frame comprising a tone map that indicates which transmit sub-bands are used to carry data for the frame. The tone map using two bits per transmit sub-band to indicate a status of each transmit sub-band. The PLC device then transmits the frame on the selected transmit sub-bands using OFDM. A resolution bit and a mode bit may be used to provide additional information about the transmit sub-bands, such as an amount of power adjustment that has been applied to carrier frequencies and whether dummy bits are transmitted on unused carrier frequencies.

When more than two layers are multiplexed in one CDM group, length-4 OCC has to be used across both clusters in one subframe. This means that slot-by-slot channel estimation according to conventional schemes cannot be exploited and Doppler impact cannot be well overcome. By introducing virtual variables and virtual channel samples that are used in processing two time slots in a subframe independently and applying a frequency domain filter based on the virtual variables and then performing postprocessing based on virtual channel samples, slot-by-slot processing is possible to reduce latency and overcome Doppler impact. Code de-spreading of length-4 OCC is no longer processed in time domain, but in frequency domain with two adjacent CDM subgroups. As a result, the frequency domain filtering can start earlier whereby detection latency and processing time for OCC of length longer than 2 is reduced. It can also be used for the length-2 OCC.

Systems and methods are presented for transmitting additional data over preexisting differential COFDM signals by changing the amplitude of the legacy data symbols. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, additional data capacity can be achieved for a COFDM signal which is completely backwards compatible with existing legacy satellite broadcast communications systems. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, additional information can be overlaid on a legacy COFDM signal by applying an amplitude offset to the legacy symbols. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, special receiver processing can be implemented to extract this additional information, which can include performing channel equalization across frequency bins to isolate the amplitude modulated overlay signal. For example, at each FFT symbol time, average power across neighboring active data bins can be used to determine the localized power at the corresponding FFT bins, and a channel inversion can then, for example, be performed on the data bins to restore, as best as possible, the original transmitted symbol amplitude.

Signal (SIF) field capacity can be significantly increased by encoding SIG field data using two streams in accordance with a space-time block code (STBC) encoding scheme.
