The NI receives data traffic, and that portion of the data traffic that must be L3 routed is passed to the CPU of the NI though a token bucket meter or equivalent metering device that selectively designates a portion of the routing traffic to another NI for routing. The portion of the traffic designated corresponds to the capacity of the CPU and offloading a portion of the data traffic helps to reduce the number of packets that are discarded when a CPU is overloaded. The threshold for determining when and in what quantity the data traffic should be offloaded is either statically or dynamically set, and in the latter case may be updated automatically when traffic levels and, in some implementations, other considerations require.

A crossbar switch has N input ports, M output ports, and a switching matrix with N×M crosspoints. In an embodiment, each crosspoint contains an internal queue, which can store one or more packets to be touted. Traffic rates to be realized between all Input/Output (IO) pairs of the switch are specified in an N×M traffic rate matrix, where each element equals a number of requested cell transmission opportunities between each IO pair within a scheduling frame of F time-slots. An efficient algorithm for scheduling N traffic flows with traffic rates based upon a recursive and fair decomposition of a traffic rate vector with N elements, is proposed. To reduce memory requirements shared row queue (SRQ) may be embedded in each row of the switching matrix, allowing the size of all the XQs to be reduced. To further reduce memory requirements, a shared column queue may be used in place of the XQs. The proposed buffered crossbar switches with shared row and column queues, in conjunction with the now scheduling algorithm and the DCS column scheduling algorithm, can achieve high throughout with reduced buffer and VLSI area requirements, while providing probabilistic guarantees on rate, delay and jitter for scheduled traffic flows.

The computer calculates a ratio of a number of the select operations to a check time of the first server, wherein the check time is a period of time that has elapsed since a previous review of logged data. The computer sets a second activity category for the client based on a look-up of the ratio in a schedule of ratio ranges in a control file, wherein the second activity category is not the initial activity category. The computer transfers the client from the first server to a second server, in response to setting the second activity category.

The lowest value is selected for each sketch table. The distribution of values across all sketch tables is evaluated for each attribute pattern, producing a discriminatory power for each attribute pattern. Attribute patterns having a discriminatory power above a given threshold are selected and added to the associated sketch table values. The sketch table with the largest overall sum is identified, and the associated class is assigned to the object belonging to the attribute patterns.

When a sender has additional data to be uploaded, the sender extracts fingerprints for units of the data and sends the fingerprints to the receiver. The receiver checks its fingerprint dictionary to determine the data units to be uploaded and notifies the sender of the identified units, which then sends the identified units of data to the receiver. The technique may, for example, be applied in virtualized data store systems to reduce bandwidth usage in uploading data.

In the event that a sufficient number of the packets of a second type and the encoded duplicate packets are not received to recreate the packet of a first type, the method determines a loss ratio that represents the number of packets not recreated relative to the number of packets transmitted during a selected time interval, dynamically adjusts the overhead required to produce the encoded duplicate packets to attempt to minimize the loss ratio, detects a significant increase in the determined loss ratio over a plurality of the time intervals, successively reduces the overhead required to produce the encoded duplicate packets in response to the detection of a significant increase in the determined loss ratio, and determines whether the reduced overhead requirement stabilizes the determined loss ratio and, if the answer is affirmative, terminates the successive reduction of the overhead requirement.
