When a radio or television station desires to transmit a song or movie, for example, the radio or television station can, rather than transmitting the entire song or movie, merely transmit a command for reproducing the song or movie. An end-user's performance reproduction device, such as an enhanced radio or a television set, then accesses and reproduces the locally stored song or movie. Since the radio or television station need not transmit the entire performance, network traffic can be significantly reduced. The performance reproduction device may actively request information from the radio or television station when fresh or additional information is needed.

Furthermore, at least one of the one or more parameters is sent to the packet-switched telecommunications network. The at least one or more parameters sent to the packet-switched telecommunications network relates to the location of the mobile station. Therefore, entities within a packet-switched telecommunications network (e.g. an IMS network) that handle the terminating call for a call that is delivered to circuit-switched telecommunications network access (e.g. GSM), receive location information related to the connected party, i.e. the party (mobile terminal) receiving the call. This information is received transparently in SIP signalling.

The media session management of the invention encompasses a media server having access to multiple unicast-based media channels and a user terminal. The user terminal generates and transmits a generic, channel-transparent session request to the server. This request initiates a generic, channel-transparent media session setup procedure between the terminal and the server. The setup procedure involves exchange of requests and responses but no media channel is yet selected or notified at the server. Once the channel-transparent setup has been completed, the user terminal transmits a channel-specific rendering request for a desired media channel to the server. In a subsequent channel switch, the terminal simply transmits a new channel-specific request for a new channel to the server during the ongoing session and reusing the negotiated transport parameters of the channel-transparent setup procedure.

By defining the predetermined order it is possible, at decoder's side, to detect the borders between successive access units even when removable data packets are removed from the data stream between data stream source and decoder without incorporating any hints into the datastream. Therefore, decoders surely detect the access unit beginnings and endings and are not liable to buffer overflow.

A personal media broadcasting system enables video distribution over a computer network and allows a user to view and control media sources over a computer network from a remote location. A personal broadcaster receives an input from one or more types of media sources, digitizes and compresses the content, and streams the compressed media over a computer network to a media player running on any of a wide range of client devices for viewing the media. The system may allow the user to issue control commands (e.g., “channel up”) from the media player to the broadcaster, causing the source device to execute the commands. The broadcaster and the media player may employ several techniques for buffering, transmitting, and viewing the content to improve the user's experience.

When a communicating device detects a decrease in performance or quality of service indicative of a limited bandwidth condition, the amount of compression for the current or subsequent sessions is temporarily increased to allow the currently available bandwidth to support the session or subsequent sessions. After a set period of time, or when the limited bandwidth condition is removed, communications associated with the sessions can revert back to transporting uncompressed data or reducing the amount of compression for the sessions, thus using more of the available bandwidth.

A pre-roll calculation program determines a pre-roll for each segment of the multimedia object and generates a modified multimedia object which includes a pre-roll for each of its segments, a pre-roll identifying a portion of the multimedia object to be transmitted by the streaming media server and received by the client computer prior to playback of the multimedia object at a selected segment. The pre-roll allows the client computer to present, starting at a selected segment, the multimedia object in its entirety without interruption. The pre-roll calculation program further facilitates the design of the multimedia object to minimize delays associated with random accesses to segments of the multimedia object.

One embodiment is a method for providing an online conference comprising: a conferencing system establishing an audio conference with a plurality of client devices via a communication network, each client device associated with a first participant; the conferencing system determining at least one second participant co-located with one of the first participants and the corresponding client device; and the conferencing system presenting, to each of the client devices, the audio conference and a conference user interface, the conference user interface displaying a participant object identifying each of the first and second participants.

A method of processing data for limiting, during a multimedia session involving a first user terminal, transferring or mirroring a media stream to other user terminals, including: a) receiving a request to transfer or mirror a media stream transmitted by the first user terminal, the request containing information relating to a second user terminal which is the target of the transfer or mirroring operation, and information relating to the media stream to be transferred or mirrored; b) comparing the information relating to the second user terminal and to the media stream to be transferred or mirrored with a series of information elements relating to transfer or mirroring operations authorized for the multimedia session, and determining, according to the comparison, an authorization for the transfer or mirroring operation; and c) when the transfer or mirroring operation is authorized, transferring or mirroring the media stream to the second user terminal.

In embodiments of the present disclosure improved capabilities are described for delivering a command to a group of computing devices, comprising sending a message from a controller to a first of a plurality of computing devices, wherein the plurality of computing devices are on the same network, and where the message includes a plurality of bit-wise addresses and a command. The message is then broadcast from the first of the plurality of computing devices to the remaining of the plurality of computing devices. The execution of the command amongst the executing each of the plurality of computer devices is made with low time-latency due to the near-simultaneous delivery of the message to the plurality of computing devices.
