If the data is not in the disk control cluster 1 - 1 , the channel interface unit 11 accesses to the global shared memory unit 21 , check a disk control cluster with the requested data stored therein, obtains the requested data from the disk control cluster where the requested data is stored, and transfer the data to the host computer 3 . A multi-node server transmits world-wide-web pages to network-based browser clients. A load balancer receives all requests from clients because they use a virtual address for the entire site. The load balancer makes a connection with the client and waits for the URL from the client. The URL specifies the requested resource. The load balancer waits to perform load balancing until after the location of the requested resource is known. The connection and URL request are passed from the load balancer to a second node having the requested resource. The load balancer re-plays the initial connection packet sequence to the second node, but modifies the address to that for the second node. The network software is modified to generate the physical network address of the second node, but then changes the destination address back to the virtual address. The second node transmits the requested resource directly to the client, with the virtual address as its source. Since all requests are first received by the load balancer which determines the physical location of the requested resource, nodes may contain different resources. The entire contents of the web site is not mirrored onto all nodes. Network bottlenecks are avoided since the nodes transmit the large files back to the client directly, bypassing the load balancer. Client browsers can cache the virtual address, even though different nodes with different physical addresses service requests.

A system and method are described for implementing a distributed database caching system (300) with the capability to support and accelerate read and update transactions to and from one or more central Database Management System (DBMS) servers (330) for multiple concurrent users. The system and method include a resource abstraction layer in a database client driver in communication with remote server units (RSUs) (302A-302D) having a cache database (318A-318D). RSUs respond to user requests using the cache database if possible. If the cache database does not have the needed data, the RSU sends the request to a database subscription manager (DSM) in communication with the DBMS server (307). The DSM (307) responds to the request and sends predicate data based on queries processed by the DBMS server (330) for use in updating the cache databases (318A-318D).

A method of and system for secure content delivery. The method is carried out by a content delivery network service provider (CDNSP), which operates a secure CDN. The secure CDN may be a dedicated network or a subset of a larger distributed network that is managed by the service provider. A Web site obtains secure content delivery, preferably as a managed service, by aliasing the site (or given domains) to the CDN. Edge servers are selectively authenticated into the secure CDN before they can be used to deliver secure content, and the CDN service provider serves SSL pages over a secure connection on the site's behalf, preferably using an SSL certificate provided by the site. A copy of the customer's SSL certificate resides on the secure edge servers to allow them to serve SSL content on the customer's behalf. A key agent running on the edge server, however, ensures that the copy of the certificate only resides in memory and not on disk. Further, a server that cannot be fully monitored by the CDN service provider removes the certificate from its memory and no longer serves the SSL traffic.

A technique for managing network elements significantly reduces the amount of monitoring related traffic by using a combination of aperiodic polling and asynchronous event reporting. A global resource (e.g., a network of interconnected nodes or resources) is partitioned into a plurality of separate nodes, giving a fixed resource budget to each of the nodes. When any of the nodes exceeds its budget, based upon local monitoring at that node, the node triggers a report, typically sending a message to a central manager. In response, the central manager then and only then issues a global poll of all (or substantially all) of the nodes in the network. A rate based technique can also be used to monitor resource usage at the nodes, and send a message to a central monitoring location only when the rate at which the value of a local variable changes is too high.

The invention is a method and apparatus for mirroring and relaying computer data to improve continuity of data by maximizing the distance between two copies of the data in synchronous mode, zero data loss environments. In one embodiment, the invention uses multiple remote mirror sites to increase the distance of one copy of mirrored data from another copy of mirrored data. In another embodiment, the invention uses relays in a wide-area cascade to increase the distance of a remote mirror site from a server sending write requests. This is done without affecting system performance by allowing the server to continue performance when an acknowledgment is received from the first relay, without waiting for an acknowledgment from the remote mirror site.
