At present, there are operators which perform a Location Update procedure for a subscriber via Local Number Server under invoice agreement with the subscriber himself, and even where the subscriber is roaming in an area without roaming agreement with the subscriber's operator. In this situation, the subscriber's operator loses revenues because it has no roaming agreements with the operator where the subscriber is roaming, whilst the latter gets revenues from the subscriber by using the subscriber's operator Subscriber Identity Module or newer operator's card. To avoid this situation, there is provided a home location server arranged to determine whether roaming restrictions apply for a home subscriber before providing authentication data for said home subscriber and either deny the authentication data for the home subscriber to the requesting entity or apply a charging or billing for the provision of the authentication data for said home subscriber.

A set of techniques are described for preventing the problem of voicemail tromboning. The techniques can be implemented with a service broker or other intermediate entity having a connection to a telecommunications network. The service broker can receive an incoming call from a switch in a home network of the subscriber. The service broker can then determine that a recipient device of the incoming call is roaming in a visited network. If it is determined that the subscriber is roaming, the service broker can contact a remote switch in the visited network and instruct the remote switch in the visited network to disable late call forwarding prior to relaying the incoming call message to the remote switch. The service broker can then be responsible for contacting the voicemail server in the home network of the subscriber so that the subscriber can still have access to voicemail.

A mobile computing device that supports cost aware network behavior. An operating system of the mobile computing device may associate data for transmission with a entity and, based on a policy applicable to that entity and information on data usage, determine appropriate processing for the data. The processing may include transmitting the data, with or without throttling, or blocking transmission of the data. The policy, for example, may be supplied by a user or may be encoded in a tag supplied with the data for transmission. Systems and methods are disclosed for performing online charging for text messages. One embodiment comprises a system that handles a Mobile Originated (MO) text message. The system receives a send request for the MO text message, and generates an online credit request for the MO text message. The system determines a type of originating network for the MO text message, and inserts an indicator of the originating network type in the online credit request. The system may also determine a type of terminating network for the MO text message, and insert an indicator of the terminating network type in the online credit request. The system then transmits the online credit request to an online charging system to charge for the MO text message.

Users may be selected to receive an offer to receive incentives based on range to the base station, with users closer to the base station being more likely to receive such an offer. The cellular communications system may be a 3G wireless system and the alternative spectrum may be white space in the digital TV spectrum.

Signaling through a plurality of network elements is traced during a trace session. The network elements generate trace records that record information associated with a communication session and that include a charging identifier that is used as a trace recording session reference for the trace session. The charging identifier is a unique network-wide identifier for a subscriber, UE or service and can be used by an operations support system to correlate which trace records are associated with a same subscriber, UE or service that is being traced and, thereby, may enable end-to-end tracing through a network.

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a method and related network node including one or more of the following: receiving, at the network device from an entity, a request for a serving device assigned to a subscriber; attempting to locate an assignment record associated with the subscriber; in response to locating the assignment record associated with the subscriber, identifying an assigned serving device of the multiple serving devices indicated by the assignment record as being assigned to the subscriber; and transmitting a response to the entity, wherein the response identifies the assigned serving device.
