Systems and methods for addressing pagers are described. The pagers are reprogrammable and can be assigned identifiers as required. Pagers may be automatically assigned one of a plurality of identifiers. Thereafter, the assigned identifier may form the basis of a unique network address that allows the pagers to communicate wirelessly with a network in order to receive information commands and pages. The assigned identifier is maintained on the pager and can be presented on a display for identification of the pager. The assigned identifier can be transmitted to the pager by a charging unit when the pager is connected to the charging unit and can be calculated using the location of a port at which the pager is connected to the charging unit.

In accordance with this invention, callers to the ACD are frequently assigned a preferred agent for handling their transactions. If the callers have not completed a transaction, the agent who is serving a call for that transaction provides a transaction number to the caller and the caller subsequently is connected to the agent associated with that transaction number. A local server has a connection to a client and to a remote server over the Internet. The local server receives a request for an audio file from the client and, in response, transmits a requests for the audio file to the remote server. Transcoding may include changing the audio file type, compressing the audio file, reducing the number of audio channels, or reducing the sampling rate of the data. The local server determines the extent and type of transcoding to be performed on the audio file as the audio file is downloaded from the remote server. The extent and type of transcoding are based on the file formats which the client is capable of handling, the size of the requested audio file, the memory capacity of the client, the bandwidth of the connection between the local server and the client, and the desired level of audio quality. Transcoding may be performed on-the-fly while the requested audio file is being downloaded to the local server from the remote server and while the modified audio file is being downloaded from the local server to the client.
