A system and method for identifying audio command prompts for use in a voice response environment is provided. A signature is generated for audio samples each having preceding audio, reference phrase audio, and trailing audio segments. The trailing segment is removed and each of the preceding and reference phrase segments are divided into buffers. The buffers are transformed into discrete fourier transform buffers. One of the discrete fourier transform buffers from the reference phrase segment that is dissimilar to each of the discrete fourier transform buffers from the preceding segment is selected as the signature. Audio command prompts are processed to generate a discrete fourier transform. Each discrete fourier transform for the audio command prompts is compared with each of the signatures and a correlation value is determined. One such audio command prompt matches one such signature when the correlation value for that audio command prompt satisfies a threshold.

The present invention provides a distributed architecture that includes multiple voice processing units (16-24). A voice processing unit (16) is designated as a home voice processing unit for a subscriber's messages. An incoming call or access by a subscriber from a central office (30) is preferentially switched to the home VPU (16) by a digital switching system (14) under the control of a master control unit (10). If the master control unit 10 determines that all lines to the home voice processing unit (16) are busy or the voice processing unit is otherwise unavailable, the master control unit causes the digital switching system (14) to switch the call to another or remote voice processing unit. The remote voice processing unit then handles the calls by either locally storing a message or retrieving a message from the home voice processing unit storage over an internal massage bus. If a message is stored remotely and the home voice processing unit is processing the subscriber request, the home voice processing unit can access the remote message over an internal message bus or the master control unit can switch the call routing through the digital switching system to the remote voice processing unit for processing of the remote message and return the digital switching system routing to the home voice processing unit when finished with the remote message. Each voice processing unit (16-24) stores both remote and home messages locally on local disc storage units. The master control unit (10) stores subscriber related information such as the home voice processing unit for each subscriber and the location of each message for that subscriber. Communication between the master control unit and the voice processing units is over an internal network. A hot standby master control unit (12) is provided to take control of the system in the event that the primary master control unit fails.

The migration function is activated on the destination system by specifying one or more migration ranges of mailboxes. When a call is received for one of the mailboxes in the migration range(s), if the destination system does not have the mailbox information in its database, a query is sent to the source system to retrieve the mailbox information which is stored at the destination system. Messages are retrieved from the source system by the destination system using remote play capabilities. The background migration utility sequences through mailboxes in the specified migration range(s) and transfers all mailbox information which has not yet been transferred by queries. When the background utility is finished, the migration function can be deactivated and the mailboxes on the source system can be deleted when all of the voice messages of the migrated mailboxes have expired.

In the distributed messaging system, a call originating from a local MS Node requesting data that resides on a remote messaging system may be transferred to the remote MS Node that has the requested data. The call is processed such that a local NIU accepts the call and communicates the call to a local host. The local host processes the call and determines that the data being requested resides on a remote host. The call is then passed back to the local NIU and transferred to the appropriate NIU using the WAN for processing by the appropriate remote host having the requested data.

A system in which centralized announcement platforms are connected to host switches over dedicated trunks, and remote switches needing announcement services send a signaling message to a host switch requesting a connection to the announcement platform. A connection is then established between the host switch and the remote switch over a regular trunk, and the full connection is completed over a dedicated circuit between the host switch and the announcement platform. Announcement message ID and other information required by the announcement platform is coded in the available parameter fields of a signaling message. Less total circuits are required and redundancy is provided.

A mail center management system includes a first network (2) accommodating a plurality of subscriber terminals (1-1 - 1-4) via lines, and a plurality of mail devices connected to the first network. Each of the mail devices, which has a device number and subscriber information about all the subscriber terminals, includes a storage medium for storing mails received from the subscriber terminals. A second network (4) connects the mail devices to each other and transfers the mails between the mail devices. Each of the mail devices includes a first part (62) for determining whether a request to transfer from a first one of the subscriber terminals to a second one of the subscriber terminals includes a subscriber number of the second one of the subscriber terminals or the device number of one of the mail devices together with the subscriber number. Further, each of the mail devices includes a second part (62-68) for storing, via the second network, the mail in the storage medium of one of the mail devices to which the first and second ones of the subscriber terminals are connected when the first means determines that the request includes no device number and for storing, via the first and second networks, the mail in the storage medium of one of the mail devices to which the second one of the mail devices is connected when the first means determines that the request includes the device number together with the subscriber number.

Apparatus, methods, and machine-readable articles of manufacture improve reliability and scalability of a messaging system. In some embodiments, the system's configuration data and subscriber information are stored in a central repository of a core node, and replicated to one or more non-core nodes. Data replication may be performed in real-time or near real-time, periodically, sporadically, or otherwise. Nodes may rely on the replicated data to provide the system's subscribers and outside callers with services that do not involve updating of configuration or subscriber data. In this way, the non-core nodes may continue to process calls when the core node is unavailable. For example, the non-core nodes can route calls to the appropriate subscribers without relying on the core. As another example, the non-core nodes can take messages from callers when the core node is unavailable. The messages may be queued for posting and delivery when the core node becomes available.

Authentication of voice message recipient network addresses employs generating (102) and storing (104) a "network file" that includes "voice clips" and associated network addresses that are extracted from voice messages received across a network (10) from voice message systems (16, 18). A voice clip is the first one to three seconds of voice extracted from each received voice message. Over time, the network file will grow to contain multiple voice clips and associated network voice message addresses. When a voice message originator subsequently enters a recipient's network address (106), the originating voice message system searches (114) the network file for the network address, retrieves the associated voice clip (116), and plays it for the voice message originator to authenticate the recipient's network address. Voice authentication of a voice message originator entails encoding (134) into a "voice print file", original voice clips and associated network addresses received from positively identified voice message originators. Thereafter, when a questionable voice message is received (138), the voice message system extracts a new voice clip (142), generates a new voice print (144), and compares it with the original voice print associated with the voice message address (148). If the voice prints are substantially the same, the received voice message is annotated with an "authenticating" message (150).

Procedures are disclosed for supporting roaming subscriber mobile station (18) access to stored subscriber data messages. In either case, the storing message center thereafter performs any requisite operations needed to facilitate message forwarding to or retrieval by the addressee subscriber mobile station.
