An arrangement is described for reading information from and/or writing information to a sheet of flexible sheet material. A platen supports the sheet in a curved configuration across its width such that its first surface is inwardly oriented with respect to a curved configuration to define a tubular shape having lengthwise edges of the sheet positioned in a confronting relationship. An actuator moves the sheet in a direction along a lengthwise path oriented at least generally along the length and transverse to the direction of curvature, but without rotation about the lengthwise path. An apparatus for reading information from and/or writing information to at least one sheet of flexible sheet material , said sheet having a length and a width defining first and second opposing surfaces and opposing lengthwise and widthwise edges , said apparatus comprising:a platen to support said sheet in a curved configuration across said width such that said first surface is inwardly oriented with respect to said curved configuration to define a tubular shape having said lengthwise edges positioned in a confronting relationship;an actuator to move said flexible sheet material so supported in a direction along a lengthwise path oriented at least generally along said length and transverse to the direction of curvature, but without rotation about the lengthwise path; andat least one of a read head and a write head for at least one of reading and writing information widthwise across said first surface of said sheet as the sheet is moved along said path in said tubular shape.2. An assembly for transferring information to and/or from flexible sheet media in a highly advantageous curved configuration is disclosed. The sheet material includes a length and a width defining first and second opposing surfaces. A multi-position lens enables the use of photosensitive media of multiple thicknesses in the printer, while utilizing the same projection optics. A printer includes a support (22) which receives and holds print media in a cylindrical shape in a manner that the outer surface of the print media is fixed, while the position of the inner surface of the print media varies with the thickness of the received print media. A rotor (11) is mounted for simultaneous rotation within, and linear translation along the axis of, the cylindrical shape of received print media. A write head assembly (32) on the rotor includes a light source, projection optics adapted to focus light from the source onto the inner cylindrical surface of received media, and apparatus for adjusting the focus of the projection optics so that the inner surface of received print media can be kept in focus for different thicknesses of print media light source. An optical recording and data processing system for exposing an image on to a flexible, light sensitive medium, which includes a medium holder having an inner cylindrical wall portion against which is held said medium, and a light source having an approximately rectangular emitting aperture, with a short aperture axis and a long aperture axis, operative to emit a beam of light having a rectangular cross section with a long axis corresponding to the long aperture axis and a short axis corresponding to the short aperture axis. An optical modulator is aligned with the light source so as to intercept light from the beam of light and produce a spatial modulation pattern across the long axis of the beam of light. A pattern shifter for shifting the spatial modulation pattern across the length of the long axis at a constant rate is provided as is a pattern rotator for rotating the spatial modulation pattern at a rate equal to the rate of shifting of the spatial modulation pattern. A scanner for scanning the beam of light onto and across the circumference of the inner cylindrical wall portion and a driver for advancing the scanner mechanism, after scanning a row, to an adjacent row to repeat the scanning are both provided. The relative phase angle between rotation of the spatial modulation pattern and scanning of the pattern is maintained such that the direction of movement of the projected image of said shifting is parallel to the scan motion, but opposite in direction. An optical system is provided to project the modulated beam of light and focus it to produce an image of the shifting modulation pattern at the recording medium so that the rate of shifting motion cancels the scan motion.

A photoplotter includes a plurality of independently controlled optical beam generators that emit an optical beam to a corresponding scanning assembly which then reflects the optical beams to the media. A scanner includes a plurality of optical beam receivers that generate imaging signals indicative of the optical beam reflected from the media by each corresponding scanning assembly. The optical beam generators and receivers may be disposed at one end of the internal drum. This embodiment requires the rearward scanning assembly include an optical periscope for reflecting the optical beam parallel to the longitudinal axis of the internal drum. A controller generates independent drive signals to move each of the scanning assemblies along the spar at a preferred rate for scanning the media. The additional correction data is added to the beam position correction data to obtain the final correction data, by which the optical deflecting device is controlled.

There is proposed a method and apparatus for multibeam scanning an inner face of a cylindrical drum, in which scanning lines are straightened under a simple control, and an interval between the scanning lines can be easily changed, thereby simplifying a constitution. In an embodiment, while keeping an interval between two light beams projected to an optical scanning system, the light beams are one-dimensionally deflected in mutually orthogonal directions in synchronism with a rotation of the spinner, respectively. In a second embodiment, one light beam is projected along a central axis common with the spinner and the cylindrical drum to the spinner. The other light beams are inclined in a plane including the central axis by a constant angle  y separately predetermined for each of the other light beams, and further inclined in a direction orthogonal to the plane including a rotation axis by an angle  x which is determined in synchronism with a rotation angle  of the spinner.

A method and apparatus for use in improving the accuracy of scanning systems is disclosed and claimed. Systems such as internal drum photoplotters include a raster scanner responsive to control signals for advancing relative to a substrate an optical beam across a substrate surface in a first direction forming a scan line of pixels and for cooperatively advancing relative to the substrate the optical beam in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction. The clock signal which is provided to a spinner to advance the optical beam across the scan line is independent from the pixel clock signal which is provided to control the generation of pixels. There is a memory for storing error compensation signals indicative of compensation needed to remove deviations of the separation between adjacent pixels in said scan line from preferred values thereof. The apparatus is characterized by a controller for generating control signals in dependence on the error compensation signals such that the phase of the clock signal is adjusted, thereby removing the pixel separation error for a segment of the scan line.

For receiving mode operation a developing station 900 is provided to render the electrostatic pattern visible by means, for example, of iron filings mixed with electroscopic toner particles, and at a fusing station 950 the toner material is fused to the copy sheet. Electrographic processing.-The electrostatic pattern is supplied to the copy sheet by two diametrically opposed recording heads (708, 709), Fig. 14 (not shown), on the rotating turret 700. Each head includes a stylus (740) carrying a high voltage, which is movable into an operative position under the control of a solenoid (SOL 750) receiving the incoming electrical signals. After the complete copy sheet has been subjected to recording it is advanced to the developing station where it comes into brushing contact with the iron filings/toner mixer borne magnetically by a rotating drum 907, Fig. 11. The mixture is supplied to the drum 907 by two concentric helical screw conveyers 903, 905, and the desired magnetic field distribution about the drum 907 is obtained by means of fixed magnets 909, 909<SP>1</SP> within the drum 907. A method of acquiring at least one image from an image recording medium using a pulsed radiation source is provided. In one aspect, a method of scanning an image recording medium that has been exposed to X-ray radiation comprises providing first radiation along a plurality of scan traces over a surface of the image recording medium such that the first radiation does not impinge on the image recording over at least one interval along each of the plurality of scan traces. The pulsed laser source may reduce and/or eliminate cross-influence artifacts in images resulting from pulsed radiation image acquisition.

Arrangement for reading from and/or writing to flexible sheet media in a curved configuration and method

An assembly for transferring information to and/or from flexible sheet media in a highly advantageous curved configuration is disclosed. The sheet material includes a length and a width defining first and second opposing surfaces. The assembly includes support means for supporting the sheet the curved configuration across its width, having the first surface inwardly oriented with respect to the curved configuration. Thereafter, moving means moves the flexible sheet material so supported in a direction along a read/write path generally parallel to the sheet material length and transverse to the direction of curvature. A read/write arrangement is provided which is configured for reading and/or writing information across the width of the first surface of the sheet as the sheet is moved along the path in the curved configuration. In one feature, means is provided for rotationally moving the read/write arrangement in a predetermined way in the housing such that the read/write arrangement is in a confronting relationship with the first, inwardly oriented surface and cooperates with the movement provided by the sheet material moving means so as to cause the read/write arrangement to sequentially read information from and/or write information to the inwardly oriented, first surface of the sheet as the read/write arrangement traverses the width of the flexible sheet material while the latter is on the read/write path in the curved configuration. In another feature, a read and/or write operation may be performed on the second, outwardly oriented surface of the sheet material.
