The fax call has a source address, a destination address and a fax signal. The Internet fax system is coupled to a circuit-switched network and a packet-switched network and includes multiple fax processing resources having different configurations, features, capabilities or capacities. One or more desired fax protocol technical call processing capabilities are determined for processing the fax signal based on one or more of the source address, the destination address, the type of network through which the fax call was received and a service provider through which the fax call was received. Then, a fax processing resource that has the desired fax protocol technical processing capabilities is dynamically selected to translate the fax signal into a digital representation.

The present invention provides a system of transmitting image data from a server via a network or another communication path to a cellular phone or another terminal. In order to enhance the picture quality of displayed images, the system causes input image data to be subjected to a tone correction process and a halftoning process according to display characteristics of the terminal. Image processing packages are provided in both the server and the terminal. The system selectively uses these image processing packages according to their processing capacities. The server determines execution or non-execution of image processing according to the type of the terminal. When any image processing is carried out in the server, a control signal representing execution of the image processing is mapped to the processed image data and transmitted to the terminal. The terminal determines requirement of further image processing in response to the control signal and carries out a required series of image processing, which has not been executed by the server. In this system, at least either one of the server and the terminal takes charge of the image processing to enhance the picture quality. Execution of the image processing by the device having the higher image processing capacity effectively improves the processing efficiency.

In case that the residual of the memory is below 10%(S6), it is checked whether the minimum scanning time is set as 40ms(S7). The minimum scanning time is set as 40ms(S8). The CPU judges whether the residual of the memory is existed in the range of 10%¯30%(S9). It is checked whether the minimum scanning time is set as 20ms(S10). The minimum scanning time is set as 20ms(S11). A transmission/receipt work is completed(S12). In case that the work is completed, the telephone line is cut off(S13).

At the beginning of a communication session, communication between the devices may be by transmission of voice data (speech). During the session, and without terminating voice call, an image captured by the first device may be transmitted to the second device. Prior to transmission of the image from the first device to the second device, the first device obtains from the second device image quality criteria indicative of the ability of the second device to display received images. The first device modifies (if required) the image data in accordance with the image quality criteria prior to sending the image data to the second device. In this manner, the image data sent to the second device is adjusted and optimised for the display capabilities of the second device. This will allow for the best quality image to be displayed on the second device and/or will prevent waste of network resources (for example, by not transmitting image data which cannot be displayed by the second device).

A facsimile jack selectively routes a facsimile transmission over a packet switched digital network including a source point of presence (source POP) which is local to a facsimile machine sending the facsimile transmission and a destination point of presence (destination POP) which is local to a facsimile machine receiving the facsimile transmission. The facsimile jack is connected between a facsimile machine and a telephone jack and includes a processor which determines if a destination number of the facsimile transmission is serviced by the facsimile network. If the destination number is long distance and is serviced by the facsimile network, the processor instructs a local number of the source POP to be dialed and the facsimile transmission to be sent through the source POP. If not, then other network route paths can be dialed (WATS, VPN, etc.). If a connection with other networks cannot be established either, then it dials the original number and connects the transmitting channel of the facsimile machine to the phone line. Even if the number is serviced by the network, a connection with the source POP may not be established an alternative routing paths selected if: the source POP is not operational and does not answer the incoming call; the source POP is saturated and cannot accept any additional incoming calls; the destination POP is saturated and cannot service any additional traffic; the destination POP is not operational; or the source POP or the facsimile network cannot respond with the proper initiation/training command sequence within a prescribed time-out period.
