RCA 85,111 A video signal generating system develops an encoded video signal representing less than all of the video information. Auxiliary signal generating circuitry develops a pair of auxiliary signals representing in part the remaining video information. A first of the pair of auxiliary signals includes relatively high fidelity signal but with limited bandwidth. The second auxiliary signal includes relatively low fidelity information but has an effective higher bandwidth. Depending upon the informative density of the auxiliary information, the first and second auxiliary signals are selected to produce an auxiliary output signal which is combined with the encoded video signal for transmission. A receiver responsive to the transmitted signal separates the video and auxiliary signals. The video and auxiliary signals are decoded and used to generate enhanced display images.

The present invention relates to a Time Compression Multiplexing (TCM) technique for transmitting three consecutive television picture signals from a television picture source during the time period normally used to send one television picture signal. More particularly, three consecutive lines or fields from a TV signal source are compressed into an ordinary line or field period, respectively, by sending one line or field as is, but time compressed, in one portion of a line or field period and sending two other lines or fields as differential signals, also time compressed, to occupy two separate and different portions of the same line or field period as is used by the first one line or field. The chrominance signal is split by two synchronous demodulators into the two video frequency components (B-Y)' and (R-Y)'. The two components are delayed by one TV line in delay lines in the form of shift registers for analogue signals. The two colour difference signals (B-Y) and (R-Y) are produced by addition of the two non-delayed to the corresponding delayed signal components. The colour difference signal (G-Y) is produced in a matrix adder to which the two (B-Y) and (R-Y) signals are applied in a specified ratio. Circuits for converting analogue RGB signals to analogue component signals are well known. Normally text signals are added to component signals in an analogue manner. Special problems may arise in case of upconverting such interlace video signals to a higher field frequency. Vertical jitter or unsharpness of the text can be introduced. In the RGB domain text signals can be represented by binarylike amplitude values (R, G, B). Therefore such text signals are generated digitally in the RGB domain and converted digitally to the component domain (Y, U, V). A method and device for converting a video signal from a lower dynamic range source to produce a signal usable by target devices of a higher dynamic range comprises converting with a convertor that implements a process in which a received signal is received as a luminance component and separate colour components, A modified luminance component is then produced by applying an expansion function to the luminance component for luminance values above a threshold, applying a gamma function and then applying a scaling function. The modified luminance and separate colour components are then provided as an output signal for display on a target device of a higher dynamic range. The expansion of luminance ensures that the luminance range appropriately matches the range for a target display. By applying the expansion luminance values above a threshold, values below a threshold can be maintained with appropriate values for display.

A method of encoding and decoding computer video signals for transmission over a twisted pair cable is disclosed. Vertical and horizontal sync components of a video signal are converted into narrow vertical and horizontal sync components having the pulse width of 20 nanoseconds. Narrow vertical and horizontal sync components are then combined with red and green components. After transmission via a twisted pair cable, narrow vertical and horizontal sync components are extracted from red and green components and converted back into vertical and horizontal sync components. Even though the red and green components also comprise narrow sync signals, the narrow sync signals will not be detected by the detection circuits and presence of such narrow sync components in the red and green components will not interfere with the quality of the picture displayed on the display device.

In an arrangement for transmitting digital television signals from a plurality of signal sources to at least one signal sink, an interconnection of several video signal sources which are of a simple structure and simple to operate and can be used universally and reliably for different operating modes is enabled by a picture signal line group (7) for the transmission of luminance and color signals encoded as digital picture data from always one optional signal source of the signal sources (1, 2, 3, 4), a synchronizing signal line group (8) for the transmission of a picture data clock siganl and a line synchronizing signal from a clock signal source (45) and also an access-control (9) having for each signal source (1, 2, 3, 4) an access-control circuit (13, 23, 33, 43) which supplies an inhibit signal from a output (15, 25, 35, 45) when an inhibit signal is applied to an input (14, 24, 34, 44) or when a signal from the associated signal source (1, 2, 3, 4) is available there for transmission and which when an inhibit signal is present at its input (14, 24, 34, 44) inhibits the associated signal source (1, 2, 3, 4) for the supply of digital picture data in a predetermined temporal correlation with the picture data clock signal and enables it in like manner after the inhibiting signal has disappeared, all the access-control circuits (13, 23, 33, 43) having their inputs (14, 24, 34, 44) and their outputs (15, 25, 35, 45) incorporated in a chain circuit which determines the priority of the signal sources (1, 2, 3, 4) for the transmission.

In order to prevent phase errors in the transmission of a colour television signal in time and frequency multiplex without taking account of image interference, a reference signal is inserted during image generation in at least one line of each complete image which contains no image information in its image blanking region. In the image blanking region of the line concerned the reference signal has a sloping component continuously rising with the amplitude on which a sine-wave oscillation with the frequency and phase of the colour carrier is superimposed. Throughout studio processing and broadcasting at the transmitter to preparation at the receiver, the reference signal remains inseparably linked to the image information of the appropriate complete image.
