The video signal on which the additional information consisting of the spread spectrum signal transmitted has been superimposed is received, and from this received signal, the DC component of the DCT coefficient is extracted. Inverse spread process is performed for the DC component of the DCT coefficient extracted to detect the additional information.

Data is protected from unauthorized copying by rescrambling an unauthorized version of the data, but descrambling an authorized version of the data. This is done using a trigger signal. The trigger signal is embbeded into the data to form watermarked data. The possibly protected data or watermarked data is converted to possibly usable data by extracting the trigger signal and checking the value as show in the figure. The possibly protected data is passed through a descrambler (30), where the trigger signal, if present, is extracted. A descrambling key and a descrambling algorithm (40) are applied to the possibly protected data if the trigger signal is present, but not applied to the possibly protected data if the trigger signal is not present. One property of the trigger signal is that it is preserved through signal transformation, such as one or more compression, decompression, analog to digital conversion, and digital to analog conversion. As a result of this property the trigger signal can be detected in either scrambled or descrambled data.

The method comprises: acquiring an original video image to be processed, and determining a privacy area in the original video image; filling the privacy area with preset filling data, so as to obtain a filled first video image; encoding the first video image to obtain a second video image; encoding the original video image to obtain a third video image, and encrypting the third video image to obtain an encrypted video image; and taking the encrypted video image as private data, taking the second video image as load data, and sending, to a terminal device, image data including the private data and the load data, wherein the private data is data that a terminal device with a privacy area access permission can access. By using the method, accurate privacy content is recovered on the premise of ensuring the security of the privacy content.

    Scrambling and descrambling a high definition TV signal

    Method and apparatus for scrambling a high definition television signal to discourage unauthorized recording of same. While recording per se is not prevented, the resulting recorded signal is rendered unusable due to an induced “wobble” between the active video and the associated sync pulses. The scrambled television signal is readily viewable on a compliant high definition television set which descrambles the HDTV signal using an encoded indication of the amount of wobble accompanying the HDTV signal. Also provided is a special interface to prevent unauthorized persons from using the indication of the amount of wobble so as to defeat the scrambling. Also provided are method and apparatus for defeating the scrambling method and hence allowing recording of the scrambled video signal.
