Techniques are disclosed for generating preference rankings in response to requests for streaming media content received from client devices. The preference rankings are used to indirectly partition streaming media content across different content distribution networks (CDNs). Such partitions may be referred to as a "soft" partition, as all of the streaming media content remains available from each CDN. That is, the partitioning of content across CDNs is not absolute, and any content item may be requested from any CDN. Doing so ensures that content remains available even where the preferred CDN for a given content item fails, while at the same time increasing the probability of a cache hit at the CDNs, without increasing the cost or the actual cache sizes of the content caches of different CDNs.

Multiple applications request data from multiple storage units over a computer network. The data is divided into segments and each segment is distributed randomly on one of several storage units, independent of the storage units on which other segments of the media data are stored. At least one additional copy of each segment also is distributed randomly over the storage units, such that each segment is stored on at least two storage units. This random distribution of multiple copies of segments of data improves both scalability and reliability. When an application requests a selected segment of data, the request is processed by the storage unit with the shortest queue of requests. Random fluctuations in the load applied by multiple applications on multiple storage units are balanced nearly equally over all of the storage units. This combination of techniques results in a system which can transfer multiple, independent high-bandwidth streams of data in a scalable manner in both directions between multiple applications and multiple storage units.

Multiple segmentation servers are synchronized to provide failover capacity in such a way that should a failover occur, the segment numbers/playlists/encryption keys/decryption keys are identical on each of the segmentation servers. Synchronizing the contents of a segmentation server on one or more backup segmentation servers ensures that the delivery of a content stream is immune to the failure of segmentation servers, provided at least one segmentation server remains fault-free. A caching server may further facilitate the fault tolerance by checking the availability of the individual segmentation servers, collect content segments from one of the segmentation servers, and serve the content segment to clients. A method comprising:identifying, by a network digital video recording (“DVR”) system, a total number of requests provided by a plurality of users to record a media program during a presentation of the media program;determining, by the network DVR system based on the total number of requests and on a predicted playback rate associated with the media program, a maximum number of temporally overlapping playback sessions of the media program that will potentially be initiated by the plurality of users subsequent to the presentation of the media program, the maximum number of playback sessions being less than the total number of requests; andstoring, by the network DVR system in response to the requests and based on the determining, a plurality of unique copies of the media program.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a total number of unique copies of the media program included in the plurality of unique copies of the media program is equal to the determined maximum number of temporally overlapping playback sessions.3. Such a system offers a dynamic library with a significant number of titles from which a user may select and offers play back a desired title fairly instantly. To facilitate instant playback, a file pertaining to a title is fragmented into a header and segments. The header is seeded in all boxes in service and none, one or more segments are distributed to the network of boxes. When the title is ordered, the header is instantly played back while the segments, if not locally available, are streamed in respectively from the boxes having the segments to enable continuous playback of the ordered title.

Direct copying between disk blocks in memory onto a network as sequential access files

In the multimedia network, in order to archive or play multimedia data for a production, a multitude of disk file blocks are retrieved from a multitude of files striped across a multitude of disk storage systems through a commutator to the input of an input/output unit. The disk file blocks are copied from the input into disk file blocks in a buffer of the memory of the unit. Then the unit creates a address-size list of data portions in the buffer for archiving the disk files of the production or for playing a multimedia data stream for the production. Then the unit executes a copy command given the address of the list which uses indirection for copying the specified portions of the buffer onto an output of the unit to store the data into an archival tape storage system or to play the production in a multimedia data stream. Also, using the above method, a production may be simultaneously archived and played by the same unit. In a related process, in order to restore the archived production or to record a multimedia data stream, the unit creates an address-size list for copying data from an input of the unit into portions of disk file blocks in a buffer in the memory of the unit. Then the unit executes a copy command given the address of the list which uses indirection for copying the data from the input of the unit into the specified portions of the buffer. Then the unit copies the disk file blocks onto an output through the commutator into disk files striped across a multitude of disk storage systems. Also, these two processes may be utilized in the same unit to simultaneously both restore a production from archival tape storage and to play the production as a multimedia data stream.

Multiple applications request data from multiple storage units over a computer network. The data is divided into segments and each segment is distributed randomly on one of several storage units, independent of the storage units on which other segments of the media data are stored. This random distribution of multiple copies of segments of data improves both scalability and reliability. When an application requests a selected segment of data, the request is processed by the storage unit with the shortest queue of requests. This combination of techniques results in a system which can transfer multiple, independent high-bandwidth streams of data in a scalable manner in both directions between multiple applications and multiple storage units.

The tiered network in this example comprises three tiers, although any number of tiers is acceptable. The three tiers are referred to respectively as master data centers (master data center tier) (18), regional data centers (regional data center tier) (16), and media serving centers (media serving center tier) (14) that are interconnected by a private asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network. A data director in the data center in cooperation with the ATM network determines which tier of servers can best fulfill a data request by an end user while minimizing the amount of hops required to provide such data.

The architecture of the present invention employs dynamic data management methods, which determine whether data should reside on disk or secondary storage (130), on which disk drives .data should be stored, and how data should be replicated and/or migrated to new disk drives based on observed user (120) access patterns. These methods also migrate popular data to faster disk tracks to reduce average access time and thus improve performance. User access requests are assigned to modules based on the data stored act each module, and each module's current load (the number of request: waiting to be serviced). If the requested data is not on a disk drived, the data is retrieved from secondary storage (130), and may be stored on the disk drives for rapid subsequent access. When a requested data item on the disk drive is replicated, load balancing is performed by assigning the request to the module holding the data with the lowest load. In addition, user access requests waiting to retrieve replicated data may be dynamically and seamlessly migrated to another module based on changes in module loads.
