The relative depth of the objects captured in the images is determined using triangulation by comparing the relative positions of the objects in the two images. The difference calculation unit calculates, for each of pixels that constitute a pickup image in each of a plurality of pickup images taken at different focal depths, a difference of a luminance value from an adjacent pixel. A difference image generation unit generates, on the basis of the difference and the focal depth at which the pickup image including the pixel whose difference is calculated is taken, a distribution of the difference with respect to the focal depth.

The plurality of AD conversion portions correspond to the respective plurality of pixel blocks, and AD-convert pixel signals based on a plurality of pixels included in the corresponding pixel block. In this case, the pixel for phase difference detection included in one pixel block of the plurality of pixel blocks, and the pixel for phase difference detection included in the other pixel block of the plurality of pixel blocks are arranged in positions corresponding to each other. The present disclosure, for example, can be applied to a CMOS image sensor.
