A hearing instrument, e.g. a hearing aid, has a mechanical, manually actuated volume setting element and also remote control volume adjustment. The volume setting element is a control dial with a fixed assignment of the respective rotational position to a respective volume setting. An adjustment by remote control changes the volume setting but not the position of the control dial. This results in the problem that the normally fixed assignment of the respective position of the control dial to the respective volume setting no longer holds true. If there is once again an adjustment by control dial after the volume setting was changed by remote control and the volume prescribed by the control dial is then set, unpleasant jumps in volume may therefore occur. Such jumps in volume are avoided by the following steps: detecting a change in the rotational position of the control dial, establishing a current rotational position of the control dial during the change, comparing the current rotational position to a comparison rotational position, changing the volume setting of the hearing instrument in accordance with the current rotational position only if the current rotational position has, at least momentarily, assumed the comparison rotational position.

An electronic device may be coupled to an accessory such as a pair of earphones. The earphones may have ear presence sensor structures that determine whether or not the ears of a user are present in the vicinity of the earphones. The earphones may contain first and second speakers. When both the first and second speakers are located in the ears of the user, the electronic device may perform functions such as playing audio content. When one of the speakers has been removed from the ears of the user while the other of the speakers remains in the ears of the user, the electronic device can take actions such as pausing the playback of audio content, switching from stereo to monophonic playback, or stopping the playback of content. Suitable actions such as increasing audio drive strength may be taken when both speakers have been removed from the ears.

Techniques are described for reducing sensitivity to non-acoustic stimuli. In some embodiments, differential beamforming is applied to microphone signals generated based on responses of microphones to an acoustic stimulus and a non-acoustic stimulus. Compensated signals can be generated based on the microphone signals such that the compensated signals are in phase with respect to the acoustic stimulus. The non-acoustic stimulus is detectable by comparing a first signal to a second signal to determine that one signal has a greater instantaneous magnitude. The first signal can be a beamformed signal or signal derived therefrom, and the second signal can be an average of the compensated signals or signal derived therefrom. An output audio signal can be generated by switching or cross fading between the beamformed signal and a noise-reduced signal such that a contribution of the noise-reduced signal is increased and a contribution of the beamformed signal is decreased.

Loud sounds with fast rise times, like gunfire and explosions, can cause noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Unfortunately, current models do not adequately explain how impulsive sounds cause NIHL, which makes it difficult to predict and prevent NIHL on battlefields and other hostile or rugged environments. Fortunately, the impulsive sounds experienced by soldiers and others working in rugged environments can be recorded using a compact, portable system that acquires, digitizes, and stores high-bandwidth audio data. An example of this system can be mounted on a helmet or other article and used to record hours of audio data at a bandwidth of 20 kHz or higher, which is broad enough to capture sounds with rise times less than 50 ms. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) digitizes these broadband audio signals at rate of 40 kHz or higher to preserve the impulse information.
