[Class 40 (iv)] In sound-reproducing apparatus for the use of the deaf or in noisy places a telephone receiver (which may be of the bone conduction type) is used for each ear, one of the telephones dealing solely or mainly with the high audiofrequencies and the other responding normally. The invention may be carried out by the use of fixed or variable filters, e.g. transformer circuits of the kind described in Specification 381,540, [Group XXXV], associated with amplifiers or by merely connecting a small condenser in series with one of two receivers of the same kind. Alternatively a condenser receiver and a magnetic receiver may be connected directly in parallel. Where a very large high-note output is required, separate amplifiers may be used.

An automatic level control audio circuit is for either a polarised or unpolarised microphone. The output of the microphone is connected to the collector of a transistor (Q) and the emitter is connected to an amplifier of appropriate gain. The transistor connections may be reversed. Its base is polarised in one direction by a fixed resistor (R1) and in the other direction by the rectified output (R3) of a potentiometer across the amplifier output. The device for conditioning the inner ear of a subject comprises a number of sound producing devices, such as a tape recorder, coupled through a preamplifier (12) to a number of signal treatment stages (13a) in cascade. Each stage has an amplifier (15a) with variable gain, a variable filter (16a), a gate (17a) and amplifier (18a). The amplifier output also connects through a threshold regulating device (14a) to the gate and the input of the next cascaded stage. The stage outputs are all connected to left and right delay circuits (20,21) each of which has an undelayed output (20a,21a) connected to a skull vibrator (8,9) and a delayed output (20b,21b) connected to earphones (10,11) and loudspeakers (6,7). Sound information is recorded on a base tape (10) to comprise several sequences each formed from a series of words. These words are single, or at most, double syllables. The sequences are separated by pauses of several seconds which contain recordings of a pure note. The recorded information is read by a head (11) which converts the signals to electrical signals for input to a frequency equaliser (12). This is used to unbalance an equalised message in order to increase the sound level in the audible range for the frequencies at which there is a hearing loss. The corrected signals are recorded onto a tape (14) in a cassette (15) using a recording head (13). The cassette with its tape is then used for the hearing exercises. The system is partic. suited for people who have suffered a hearing loss over a part of the normal audible frequency spectrum.

The device system may be configured at least to generate an output audio signal at least by transposing and causing a negative rank ordering of frequency of at least a portion of the input audio signal. Compression also may be performed on the at least the portion of the input audio signal as part of generating the output audio signal. The negative rank ordering may be performed on a high-frequency portion of the input audio signal that becomes a low-frequency portion of the output audio signal by the transposing. The low-frequency portion of the output audio signal may represent an inverted ordering of frequencies or frequency segments present in the high-frequency portion of the input audio signal.

The high-frequency channel includes a gain control amplifier for compressing the dynamic range of high-frequency components and means for adjusting the level of the compressed high-frequency signal relative to the level of signals passed by the low-frequency channel. The low-frequency and high-frequency signals are combined in a summing amplifier, the output level of which is controlled by a volume control and then amplified in power sufficiently to drive a wide dynamic range external speaker.

The noise signal is generated dependent on the wind noise signal, so that the wind noise signal is at least partly masked. The resultant signal is perceived by the wearer of the hearing aid to be less disturbing.

By adaptively controlling the compression threshold, performance of the device can be optimized to match its environment.

If the transmission signal is not desirable, the circuitry selects the signals from the primary audio source for coupling with the hearing aid circuitry.

A cochlear prosthesis comprising an electtvde array of individually addressable electrodes and a stimulator device to provide electrical stimuli to selected groupings of electrodes in response to sound signals. The stimuli and the electrode groupings being determined by reference to a predefined instruction set. The cochlear prosthesis is characterized in that in response to different sound signals at least two distinct current distribution geometries are induced in ttie auditory structures of a user. This may be achieved by using different electrode geometries, different stimulation modes, combinations of stimulation mobs and/or electrode geometiies.

A method of and apparatus for accurately adjusting a hearing aid. First a wide-band reference signal of relatively low sound level, e.g. 40 to 50 dB, is reproduced via a loudspeaker. The gain of the hearing aid is adjusted so that the person wearing it can just hear this reference signal. Then, in addition to the reference signal, a periodically recurring narrow-band signal having a duration of approximately 150 msecs is reproduced and the range of the optimum sound-level of speech is determined for different central frequencies of this narrow-band signal. The range thus determined is compared with the range of optimum sound-level of speech for persons with normal hearing and subsequently the setting of the hearing aid is corrected so that the sound level experienced as a pleasing sound level of speech by the user of the hearing aid falls within the sound-level range which is pleasing to persons with normal hearing.

The invention relates to a hearing aid with a microphone (3), an amplifier (1, 2, 4 to 8, 10 to 12) and an earpiece (9). To improve the listening quality, the amplifier exhibits two parallel amplifier channels (1, 2) having different gain characteristics (1A, 2A). The characteristic of one amplifier channel (1) rises with frequency over the middle frequency range whereas the characteristic of the other amplifier channel (2) corresponds to an approximately constant gain in the entire frequency range. The two amplifier channels (1, 2) in each case contain a gate circuit (5, 6) which are controlled by means of a control circuit (7), which distinguishes between voiced and unvoiced speech tones, in such a manner that voiced components are processed in one amplifier channel (1) and unvoiced components are processed in the other amplifier channel (2). As a result, a higher gain than in conventional hearing aids can be selected without inconveniences arising during the listening. <IMAGE>
