For example, when the Bluetooth interface detects interference levels above acceptable thresholds, the Wi-Fi interface adjusts operation of one or more of its transmit chains based on various conditions such as duty cycle, Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI), etc. Various embodiments of the present invention provide simultaneous operation of WLAN and PAN interfaces, without requiring time division coexistence, by reducing power on a subset of interfering antennas.

An information apparatus, which includes a wireless communication unit compatible with IEEE802.11, may access a wireless local area network (WLAN). To setup the wireless synchronization, the user connects the information apparatus to a wireless output device over a wired connection (e.g., USB) and selects the wireless output device. Information associated with the wireless output device is saved in the mobile information apparatus for enabling wireless synchronization. Next, the user connects the mobile information apparatus to the WLAN, and, depending on the availability of the wireless output device in the network, the information apparatus may lock a wireless connection to the wireless output device for wireless synchronization. A client application in the mobile information apparatus and output controller software in the wireless output device may be required to facilitate the wireless synchronization over the WLAN.

A thermostat communication server stores a thermostat battery-level to determine what data should be sent to the thermostat. If the battery-level associated with the battery on the thermostat is at a low battery-level, the thermostat communication server may only transmit data classified under a high-priority data type. This conserves the power used by the thermostat, allows the battery on the thermostat time to recharge and perform other functions. If the battery-level of the thermostat is at a high level, the thermostat communication server may transmit a range of data to the thermostat classified from a low-priority type to a high-priority data type.

Arrangements involving portable devices (e.g., smartphones and tablet computers) are disclosed. One arrangement enables a content creator to select software with which that creator's content should be rendered—assuring continuity between artistic intention and delivery. Another utilizes a device camera to identify nearby subjects, and take actions based thereon. Others rely on near field chip (RFID) identification of objects, or on identification of audio streams (e.g., music, voice). Some technologies concern improvements to the user interfaces associated with such devices. Others involve use of these devices in connection with shopping, text entry, sign language interpretation, and vision-based discovery. Still other improvements are architectural in nature, e.g., relating to evidence-based state machines, and blackboard systems. Yet other technologies concern use of linked data in portable devices—some of which exploit GPU capabilities. Still other technologies concern computational photography. A great variety of other features and arrangements are also detailed.
