Techniques for determining timing information for cells are disclosed. A user equipment (UE) may communicate with a serving cell and may need to make measurements of other cells, e.g., to support positioning of the UE. Each cell may transmit reference signals based on its timing. Different cells may operate asynchronously or with unknown timing. The UE may send a request for measurement gaps to the serving cell and may include timing information in the request. The timing information may (directly or indirectly) convey relative timing between the serving cell and a reference cell. The serving cell may determine measurement gaps at the proper time for other cells based on the timing information from the UE and may avoid scheduling the UE for data transmission during the measurement gaps. The UE may make measurements of other cells during the measurement gaps, without losing any data from the serving cell.

A method for wireless communication , comprising:obtaining, by a user equipment (UE), a timing synchronization signal from a base station over a cellular wireless communication link;configuring, based at least in part on the timing synchronization signal, a timer function of the UE as a precision time protocol (PTP) server;configuring a PTP announce message based on the timer function; andtransmitting the PTP announce message over a local communication network.2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:determining that no other PTP server exists on the local communication network; andconfiguring the timer function of the UE as a PTP server is in response to the determination.3. Apparatus and methods are presented for synchronising a slave device signal to a reference timebase, in situations where the slave device lacks knowledge of the propagation delay for signals from the reference device, e.g. if the positions of one or both of the devices are unknown or classified, or the inter-device signal propagation distance is otherwise a-priori unknown. Reference signal propagation delay is determined using an exchange of signals between the devices, with each device using a differencing procedure for eliminating effects of receiver line bias and other hardware delays.
