Because the probability of a paging conflict is small due to the short duration of paging indicator messages, the access terminal may have very infrequent paging indicator monitoring conflicts, and when conflicts actually do occur, it is very likely that the UE will find a neighbor cell without conflict.

The server gets or maintains position data for the wireless devices. When the server receives a request from a first device to set up a temporary position-sharing relationship between it and a second device, the server facilitates symmetrical position sharing between the two devices. While the relationship is active, the server can receive updated position data from one or both devices, and if necessary calculate or recalculate a path based on the updated data. The server can also alert one of the devices should the other move too close to or too far from a specified location. The request message or messages used to establish the temporary position-sharing relationship may include a timeout specifying when the server is to sever the position-sharing relationship.

A paging procedure implemented by a base station avoids transmission of unnecessary page messages. In a first embodiment, a first base station is notified by a mobile switching center when a paging request is seat to a mobile station is a second base station. The first base station does not page the mobile station, but stores a paging parameter in memory. When the first base station receives a page response message from the mobile station, it correlates the unsolicited page response message with a paged mobile list to determine as corresponding paging parameter, and forwards the page response message with the stored paging parameter to the mobile switching center. In a second embodiment, the first base station pages the mobile station and then sends an immediate paging response to the mobile switching center without waiting for a page response from the mobile station to terminate the paging procedure at the mobile switching center.

Mobile terminated call establishment during inter radio access technology (IRAT) re-direction. Handovers between different respective radio access technologies (RATs) may be performed (e.g., IRAT redirection procedure) such that a given wireless communication device may be in communication with a given RAT cell, and then switch from that RAT cell to another RAT cell (e.g., a target RAT cell). This transition may be from a 3G cell to a target 4G cell. During such a redirection procedure, there may be some instances in which the target RAT cell may not be available immediately, and a device can check back with the first/original RAT cell during the search for the target RAT cell. That is to say, there may be some duration of time during the search for the target RAT cell in which that particular cell may not be available, and the device checks for pages in the first/original RAT cell.

A method is disclosed for improved tracking area planning and handling, comprising: assigning a single tracking area code to a plurality of eNodeBs at a messaging concentrator gateway, the messaging concentrator gateway situated in a network between the plurality of eNodeBs and the core network; storing, at the messaging concentrator gateway, at least one indicator of a last known location of a user equipment (UE) other than the single tracking area code; receiving a paging message from the core network at the messaging concentrator gateway for a UE; and performing a paging sequence using the at least one indicator to identify a set of eNodeBs to page the UE, thereby allowing larger tracking area list sizes to be used without increasing signaling traffic between the radio access network and the core network. 1. In a computer system configured to handle I/O signals received by the computer system from input devices and/or output signals output by the computer system, a virtual attachment module includes logic for selecting such that program code for coupling can alter the operating system's selection of I/O devices used for particular I/O device operations, coupling to a wireless I/O device at least for determining whether the wireless I/O device is available, and causing redirection of I/O signals destined to a default I/O device to be to the wireless I/O device, if the program code for coupling determines that the wireless I/O device is available. A virtual connection module could be used to intercept system messages indicating a wireless device is present and connected, determine whether the wireless device is present and/or connected, and determine which intercepted messages to forward, drop, delay or reformulate. 1. In a computer system configured to handle I/O signals , the I/O signals comprising input signals received by the computer system from input devices and/or output signals output by the computer system , the computer system including operating system code that includes logic for routing I/O signals between the operating system code and a plurality of I/O devices and logic for selecting among the plurality of I/O devices based on which of I/O devices appear to the operating system code to be attached to the computer system , a virtual attachment module comprising:program code for coupling to the logic for selecting such that the program code for coupling can alter the operating system's selection of I/O devices used for particular I/O device operations;program code for coupling to a wireless I/O device at least for determining whether the wireless I/O device is available; andprogram code for causing redirection of I/O signals destined to be between the logic for routing and a default I/O device to be between the logic for routing and the wireless I/O device, ...

A method and apparatus for a back channel implemented by a transmitting device in a half-duplex communication system includes monitoring for voice activity detection, indicative of an absence of human speech, while the transmitting device is transmitting on a half-duplex channel of the half-duplex communication system; transmitting a notification of a back channel opportunity to other devices on the half-duplex channel responsive to the voice activity detection; and switching to a receiving mode to receive data on the back channel while still maintaining control of the half-duplex channel.
