In an embodiment, when a device is leaving the air interface range of its home access point, it establishes a connection with an intermediary access point. In an embodiment, the communications from the network are directed to the original access point using the original IP address for the device, and forwarded to the device via the intermediary access point. Communications from the device are routed through the intermediary access point and then either directly to the network, or else through the home access point to the network. In a 1st technique, multiple AP's share an identifier, with the system coordinator directing one particular AP to respond to the wireless device, thus appearing to wireless devices as a “personal cell”. In a 2nd technique, AP's each maintain identifiers substantially unique to each wireless device, with the system coordinator directing only one particular AP to maintain any particular wireless device's identifier, thus appearing to wireless devices as a “personal AP”.

Predictive and nomadic roaming of wireless clients across different network subnets

Wireless access points detect neighboring wireless access points in different subnets. Upon connecting with a wireless client, a wireless access point determines predictive roaming information for the wireless client. Predictive roaming information identifies the wireless client; its home network subnet; and includes connection information associated with the wireless client. The wireless access point forwards the predictive roaming information associated with a wireless client to neighboring wireless access points while the wireless client is still connected with the wireless access point. Neighboring wireless access points store received predictive roaming information. Upon connecting with a wireless client, a neighboring wireless access point determines if the wireless client matches the stored predictive roaming information. If so, the neighboring wireless access point uses the predictive roaming information to quickly connect with the wireless client and to establish a tunnel to redirect network traffic associated with the wireless client through to its home subnet.

A method of supporting mobility (400, 500) in an Internet Protocol (IP)-based data network. The method comprises the steps of generating a first stateful IP autoconfiguration message at a mobile node, whereby the message includes an address capable of use for routing maintenance. The mobile node transmits, the generated message to a first access node (240), which incorporates its address and forwards the message to a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) Server. The DHCP Server (320) and access node (240) analyse the message to determine a route to deliver data to and/or from the mobile node. One or more route update message are triggered from said access node and said DHCP server to a number of network elements (230) between said access node and said DHCP server in the IP based data network to support mobility in an IP domain with minimum bandwidth use and minimum tunnelling required. A DHCP Server (320) and an access node (250) such as a DHCP Relay are also described. In this manner, the inherent configuration flexibility of stateful autoconfiguration addresses is provided, in contrast to, say, other micro-mobility management schemes where the IP address is manually configured.

With the procedure of the invention, the local mobility domain router acts as a wireless attachment point for the mobile node, thus decreasing signalling over the air interface when the mobile node moves in the network.

A communication system according to the present invention includes a plurality of local area networks (LANs). Furthermore, the system includes a gateway controller, operatively coupled to one of the plurality of LANs, for serving as an intermediary for communications between the mobile terminal and a device on one of the system backbones in order that in the event the mobile terminal is assigned a different network address by virtue of registering with an access point in another of the LANs, the device is able to maintain communications with the mobile terminal without requiring knowledge of a change in the network address of the mobile terminal.
