A lighting control system employs a microcontroller to generate time-delay pulses that are synchronized with the AC power. The time-delay pulses control conduction period of a semi-conductor switching device for transmitting AC power to a lighting load. This lighting control system enables the lighting load performing two-level or multi-level illumination in a simple and power saving manner. While the conventional circuits use cumbersome passive resistor-capacitor scheme to generate required timing control, this lighting control system uses simple scheme based on a built-in oscillator in the microcontroller. This scheme provides high flexibility and accuracy to implement delay-time triggering. The system and method in the present invention may simultaneously be applicable to lighting loads of different impedance types, especially to incandescent lamp, fluorescent lamp, and AC light emitting diode.

A circuit for determining load type of an electrical AC load that is receiving power from an AC power source through an AC power line features an electronic switch connected in series between the AC power source and the AC load. The circuit also features a triggering device, which provides a trigger signal to the electronic switch, and a measuring device, which obtains a reading of a voltage across the terminals of the electronic switch. The components of the circuit are arranged so that, within an AC half cycle, the trigger signal effects the electronic switch to progress through one conduction cycle. After an end of the AC half cycle, the measuring device obtains the reading, which has a value based on which the load type of the AC load is determined. A related method for determining the load type is also disclosed.

A plurality of spaced ceiling mounted fixtures or other controllable electrical appliances have radiation detectors mounted within each fixture and wired internally of the fixture to a dimming circuit or to a ballast. The radiation detectors have sensitivity over a wide angle and have elongated plastic radiation conduction rods which extend to or beyond the plane of the lens of the fixture to be located free of shadow effects of reflections of the fixture lens. A flexible end light fiber optics can be used in place of the acrylic rods. A narrow beam radiation transmitter selectively illuminates one of the rods or end light fiber optics without illuminating the others. The dimming circuits or ballasts within the fixtures can be further controlled by external dimmers, occupancy sensors, timeclocks, photosensors and other types of input devices. The radiation detector and ballast can occupy a common housing and share the same power supply and circuit board. The microcontroller for the radiation detector operates with a 4 of 4 voting mode until a valid signal is detected to switch the system to a 3 of 4 voting mode. An apparatus in an electronic control system allows two or three wire operations. A power supply (150) can supply power to the enclosed circuity in both two and three wire installations. Two separate zero cross detectors are used such that timing information can be collected in both two or three wire installations. Both zero cross detectors (110) are monitored and are used to automatically configure the electronic control. Over voltage circuity senses an over voltage condition across a MOSFET which is in the off state and turns the MOSFET on so that it desirably will not reach the avalanche region. Over current circuity senses when the current through the MOSFET's has exceeded a predetermined current threshold and then turns the MOSFETs off so they do not exceed the MOSFETs' safe operating area (SOA) curve. Latching circuity (120) is employed to keep the protection circuity in effect even after a fault condition has cleared. Lockout circuity (130) is used to prevent one protection circuit from tripping after the other circuit has already tripped from a fault condition. The protection circuity output is desirably configured such that it can bypass and override the normal turn on and turn off impedance and act virtually directly on the gates of the MOSFETs. Preferably, the system has a high effiiciency switching type power supply in parallel with a low frequency controllably conductive device.

Accordingly, the MLV dimmer is prevented from conducting asymmetric current when an MLV transformer of the MLV load is unloaded.

The triac is connected in series with exterior security lights (24, 24') for illuminating the area adjacent a driveway, home, and garage to provide a lighted path for the vehicle occupant after disembarkation of the vehicle.

An apparatus in an electronic control system allows two or three wire operations. A power supply (150) can supply power to the enclosed circuitry in both two and three wire installations. Two separate zero cross detectors are used such that timing information can be collected in both two and three wire installations. Both zero cross detectors (110) are monitored and are used to automatically configure the electronic control. Over voltage circuitry senses an over voltage condition across a MOSFET which is in the off state and turns the MOSFET on so that it desirably will not reach the avalanche region. Over current circuitry senses when the current through the MOSFETs has exceeded a predetermined current threshold and then turns the MOSFETs off so they do not exceed the MOSFETs' safe operating area (SOA) curve. Latching circuitry (120) is employed to keep the protection circuitry in effect even after a fault condition has cleared. Lockout circuitry (130) is used to prevent one protection circuit from tripping after the other circuit has already tripped from a fault condition. The protection circuitry output is desirably configured such that it can bypass and override the normal turn on and turn off impedance and act virtually directly on the gates of the MOSFETs. Preferably, the system has a high efficiency switching type power supply in parallel with a low frequency controllably conductive device.

The device therefore controls every individual lamp economizing energy because unlike the known devices controlling groups of lamps it acts so as to subdue the light emitted by the lamp or bulb gradually the more the space surrounding it is illuminated. The luminous energy emitted is inversely proportional to the luminous intensity of the surrounding space. The luminous energy of the space is preferably communicated to the device (1) by means of a bundle of optical fibres (2) avoiding the light reflected by the shield (14) of the lamp.

The present invention provides a method of programming a preset intensity of a dimmer switch from a radio-frequency (RF) remote control. A user is able to adjust the intensity of the lighting load to a new intensity and subsequently press and hold a preset button on the remote control to program the new intensity as the preset intensity. The remote control transmits a wireless transmission to the dimmer switch, which immediately responds to the actuation of the preset button by controlling the intensity of the lighting load to an old preset intensity. The dimmer switch then blinks a light-emitting diode representative of the new intensity to provide feedback that the dimmer switch is in the process of programming the preset intensity to the new intensity. Eventually, the dimmer switch stores the new intensity as the preset intensity and stops blinking the light-emitting diode.

A plurality of spaced ceiling mounted fixtures or other controllable electrical appliances have radiation detectors mounted within each fixture and wired internally of the fixture to a dimming circuit or to a ballast. The radiation detectors have sensitivity over a wide angle and have elongated plastic radiation conduction rods which extend to or beyond the plane of the lens of the fixture to be located free of shadow effects of reflections of the fixture lens. A flexible end light fiber optics can be used in place of the acrylic rods. A narrow beam radiation transmitter selectively illuminates one of the rods or end light fiber optics without illuminating the others. The dimming circuits or ballasts within the fixtures can be further controlled by external dimmers, occupancy sensors, timeclocks, photosensors and other types of input devices. The radiation detector and ballast can occupy a common housing and share the same power supply and circuit board. The microcontroller for the radiation detector operates with a 4 of 4 voting mode until a valid signal is detected to switch the system to a 3 of 4 voting mode. A novel mounting adaptor for mounting a visible light fiber optic cable is disclosed with the visible light fiber optic cable conducting infrared radiation for up to 24 inches.

The variable color lighting system includes a plurality of lamps controlled by a central controller. The central controller has a number of control channels, and each lamp is preset to be responsive to a specific control channel. To accomplish this, a lamp includes an address circuit which can be varied to respond to a unique address signal from any of the control channels. When the proper address is received, intensity control circuitry within the lamp responds to a digital intensity control signal transmitted by the central controller. The central controller causes all light sources in a lamp to fade from one end intensity value to the next and to reach the next intensity value simultaneously.
