The hot coal tar gases, comprising a variety of different hydrocarbons as well as inorganic gases arising from the kiln thermal processing are transferred by diffusion and forced convection to a thermal duct in which the temperature is controlled to be maintained at a temperature below that of the kiln. The gaseous hydrocarbon with the highest condensation temperature is the first to liquefy. Additional useful hydrocarbons liquefy as the temperature of the gas continues to cool from the kiln temperature of ˜5000 C to one approaching the minimum duct temperature, ˜175° C. After a number of desirable hydrocarbons present in the coal tar gas have liquefied, the liquid contents are collected, either separately or as a combination of liquid hydrocarbons. The several remaining inorganic and some hydrocarbons gases with condensation temperatures below the minimum duct temperature are separately collected in gaseous form for further processing and/or safe disposal.

A new method of producing liquid transportation fuels from coal and other hydrocarbons that significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by combining Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with catalytic dehydrogenation is claimed. Catalytic dehydrogenation (CDH) of the gaseous products (C1-C4) of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) can produce large quantities of hydrogen while converting the carbon to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Incorporation of CDH into a FTS-CDH plant converting coal to liquid fuels can eliminate all or most of the CO 2 emissions from the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction that is currently used to elevate the H 2 level of coal-derived syngas for FTS. Additionally, the FTS-CDH process saves large amounts of water used by the WGS reaction and produces a valuable by-product, MWCNT.

The part of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae SSB1 gene coding for cytosolic ATPase domain of ribosome associated chaperon cloned into expression cassette under control of the glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene (GPD1) promoter was introduced into the S. cerevisiae BY4742 strain. The recombinant strains were tested for their ability to grow and produce ethanol during glucose anaerobic and aerobic cultivations. Strains overexpressing ATPase domain of SSB1 possessed decreased concentration of intracellular ATP. They accumulated elevated amounts of ethanol and were characterized by decreased biomass accumulation as compared to the wild-type strain under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Similarly, the apyrase gene apy from E. coH encoding ATP/ADP hydrolyzing phosphatase and ATPase domain of SSB1 gene of S. cerevisiae were co-expressed under the control of galactose-inducible GAL1 promoter. The recombinant S. cerevisiae strains revealed slight reduction of biomass accumulation, while specific ATPase activity, ethanol accumulation and yield during alcoholic galactose fermentation under semi anaerobic conditions were increased.

Solid carboniferous fuels contain varying quantities of moisture, mercury, chlorine, nitrogen, sulfur, heavy metals and other materials that attain vapor pressure at elevated temperatures. The cost effective removal of these degrading and sometimes hazardous materials is important to the further use of the fuel for combustion as a solid, liquid, or gas. The solid fuel is cut, shredded, ground or sieved to appropriate size, and heated in a chamber that can exclude oxygen and air thus preventing ignition. The unwanted materials are driven in the gaseous state and extracted for disposal. The solid fuel cleaned of pollutants exits the chamber and is cooled below ignition temperature prior to contact with oxygen. The solid fuel thus purified is more appropriate for combustion, liquefaction or gasification due to the reduced costs in use as a fuel or in the post combustion clean up.

A method of producing in a bioreactor a biogas rich in methane involves electrolyzing water in an aqueous medium at a voltage in a range of from 1.8 V to 12 V in the presence of electrochemically active anaerobic microorganisms that biocatalyze production of hydrogen gas, and, contacting a species of hydrogenotrophic methanogenic microorganisms with the hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide to produce methane. Volumetric power consumption is in a range of from 0.03 Wh/L R to 0.3 Wh/L R . Current density is 0.01 A/cm E 2 or lower. The voltage is sufficient to electrolyze water without destroying microbial growth. Such a method results in improved electrolysis efficiency while avoiding the use of noble metal catalysts. Further, a combination of water electrolysis with anaerobic degradation of organic matter results in increased biogas quality and in increased biogas quantity and yield. Oxidation of hydrogen sulfide contributes to the increased quality, while an increase in the rate of organic matter hydrolysis and an increase in the production of methane from hydrogen contributes to the increased quantity and yield.

Considering the disadvantages of the known prior art, a method is to be provided that leads to a higher yield of raw gas or biogas and a higher content of methane in the raw gas and enables an economically improved operating method. To this end, the reaction is carried out in the first fermentation stage (F 1 ) while maintaining a TS content of 3 to 8% and a volume load of 1 to 3 kg OTS/m 3 d. In the second fermentation stage (F 2 ), a further reaction of the solid matter phase is carried out while maintaining a TS content of 8 to 40% and a volume load of over 2 kg OTS/ m 3 d. In the second fermentation stage, the fermentation substrate is set to a TS content that is higher than the TS content of the first stage. In both fermentation stages, the reaction is carried out in the range from slightly acidic to neutral (pH value 6.5 to 8). The biogas obtained in the fermentation stages (F 1, F 2 ) is combined or removed separately and is subjected to further purification.

The organic matter carbonization process is based on thermal treatment at high temperatures, under a controlled atmosphere, if possible in the absence of oxygen. The organic matter carbonization theory was expounded in this text, with emphasis on the thermodynamic aspects. It is shown in this exposition the important misfit between the endothermic and the exothermic carbonization stages, which hinders the use of the energy emitted during the exothermic stage by the brick kilns. Following there is a summary of the carbonization technique actual stage. The present invention relates to a method and plant for the thermal treatment of organic matter comprising independent reactors for the drying and pyrolysis of organic matter, and an independent reactor for the charcoal cooling. In this method the volatile products—non condensable gases and condensable pyrolytic vapors—are burned in an independent combustion chamber in order to supply the energy demanded by the process. In this way wood is not burned, and polluting substances are not emitted to the atmosphere. The method proposed by the present invention allows a precise control of the process in order to obtain the specified charcoal fixed carbon content; and a higher gravimetric yield, which gives an increase of the forest wood, either native or cultivated. In the independent pyrolysis and drying reactors proposed by the present invention, exiting flue gases from an external combustion chamber are driven to the drying reactor where the wood onto roll on buckets are heated and dried. Fuel gases emitted by the carbonizing wood are burned in the combustion chamber as an energy source. Inside the combustion chamber is placed a heat exchanger with the aim to reheat the pyrolytic gases. After reheated, these gases return to the carbonizing reactor in order to supply energy for the endothermic carbonizing step. The fatted soy product stream can be dried to produce dry, less than 12% water by weight, product B for use in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. If desired the full fatted soy flour or the de-fatted soy product stream can be combined with whole stillage from an ethanol process and used in producing various other value added products.

A high yield method for fermenting carbohydrate to ethanol, comprising a) treating carbohydrate with a composition containing 10-90 wt. % of an aldehyde selected from the group consisting of an formaldehyde, para-formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and mixtures thereof, 1-50 wt. % of a surfactant having an I JLB from 4 to 18, 0-20 wt. % of an antimicrobial terpene, or essential oils, 1-50 wt. % of organic acids selected from C 1-24 fatty acids, their salts, and glyceride esters thereof, and 1-50 wt. % water, b) fermenting said carbohydrate in the presence of yeast in a fermentation broth, and c) isolating ethanol in a higher yield than would be obtained without step a).
