The reaction channels will contain a catalyst for the promotion of the primary reaction.

Multiple such rod (24) and tube (1) assemblies are operated simultaneously using a drive plate (22) powered to execute an orbital motion in a plane generally orthogonal to the rods (24, 24'). In one form the plate (22) is coupled via a crank (40) to equiangularly spaced rods (24, 24') in each tube (1). The rods (24, 24') are preferably mounted to be movable radially, for example suspended through holes (23) in, and driven by, a plate (22) to execute an orbital motion or at recesses (49, 49') in the rod (24) in radially directed slots (48, 48') in an arm (46) rotated by a tube-mounted crank (40).

A tube type heat exchanger has a low wear support and drive for a whip rod (12) that orbits over the inner surface of the heat transfer tube (14) to spread a process liquid into a thin falling film. The support and drive includes a conical thrust bearing (18) near the upper end of the rod. An edge (18b) of the thrust bearing engages and rolls over a circular rim bearing surface (20). A stem pin (28) axially aligned with the rod extends upwardly over the rod and through a circular hole (30) in an orbiting drive plate. In one form, the rim bearing surface is formed on the upper edge of the tube, or on the upper edge of a generally cylindrical bearing (15) secured on or over the tube. The thrust bearing is secured between the rod and the stem. A stop disc (32) carried on the stem pin limits the fall of the rod in the tube when the orbiting stops. In another form, the rim surface is formed on a cylindrical collar (38) secured on the upper surface of the drive plate surrounding the drive hole and the thrust bearing is formed on the lower face of the stop disc fixed on the stem.
