An apparatus and method are provided for storing and dispensing into a liquid a soluble substance, such as a flavoring, a body fuel, a nutritional supplement, a stimulant, a relaxant, an alcohol neutralizer, or a medical drug. A useful application of the subject invention includes a lime flavoring held by a gelatinous artificial lime wedge stored with a beer bottle or can, or attached to a 6-pack or 12-pack carton. The artificial lime wedge may be retrieved from a protective covering and acted upon so it mixes the lime flavoring into the beer when it is inserted into the beer bottle or can. Rather than needing to buy and store a perishable natural lime, and cut it up, an artificial lime wedge may be stored for an extended period of time with a beer vessel and placed in functional contact with the beer at time of consumption. 1. An apparatus used in conjunction with a beverage vessel containing a liquid with which a soluble substance is mixed , said beverage vessel having a narrow opening for drinking said liquid , said apparatus comprising:a gelatinous elastic entity comprising said soluble substance for introduction and dissolution into said liquid, said elastic entity being larger than said narrow opening and not for fitting uncompressed through a 0.7-inch diameter circular narrow opening, and for passing completely through said narrow opening when compressed, and for uncompressing and remaining unsecured inside said liquid past said narrow opening.2. Hot water disinfection of dialysis machines, including the extracorporeal circuit thereof

A dialysis machine is disclosed that incorporates a water treatment module, a dialysate preparation module having a dialysate circuit, and an extracorporeal circuit including a dialyzer and arterial and venous blood lines that connect to the patient. The machine accomplishes on-line disinfection of all the fluid circuits of the machine, including the water treatment module, the dialysate preparation module and extracorporeal circuit, the arterial and venous lines, and the dialyzer, by circulating water heated to a high level disinfection temperature (e.g., 80 degrees C.) through the fluid passages of the machine for a sufficient time (such as an hour) to achieve high level disinfection. After the dialysis session is ended, the patient connects the arterial and venous lines to ports in a disinfection manifold that places the arterial and venous lines into fluid communication with the heated water. Thereafter, the machine is ready to disinfect the fluid circuits including the extracorporeal circuit. In a preferred embodiment, the ports of the disinfection manifold ports include recessed features that permit the hot water to circulate on the interior and exterior surfaces of the arterial and venous line connectors, thereby insuring that the surfaces of connectors themselves are also disinfected.

A method is described for priming a dialyzer placed in an extracorporeal circuit of a hemodialysis machine in situ. The method comprises the steps of substantially filling the extracorporeal circuit and the blood side of the dialyzer with fluid (such as dialysate, RO water, saline, etc.), and inducing pressure pulses in the fluid. The pressure pulses cause air bubbles from the blood side of the dialyzer to be sheared off the dialyzer membrane. The air bubbles are then conducted from the dialyzer and removed from the extracorporeal circuit. Backfiltering of fluid across the dialyzer from the dialysate circuit into the extracorporeal circuit is performed in synchrony with the pressure pulses to assist in the shearing off of air bubbles from the blood side of the dialyzer membrane.

A method for detecting the presence of blood in a dialysate solution is disclosed. The method provides for certain measurement of light intensity passing through solutions both before and during the dialysis session. Before dialysis is commenced, measurements are made of the intensity of light passing through a chamber containing a control dialysate solution that is free of blood. The light source is a first condition. The light source's state is changed from a first condition to a second condition different from the first condition. Next, a second measurement of the intensity of light is made. The first and second measurements are stored. During dialysis, the method continues with the following steps: conducting a third measurement of the intensity of light of the light source that passes though the chamber, the chamber containing dialysate solution that may contain the patient's blood, with the light source in the first condition. Next, the state of the light source is changed from the first condition to the second condition. A fourth measurement of the intensity of light passing through the solution is made. A suitable processor calculates an attenuation coefficient indicative of the presence of blood in the dialysate solution during dialysis from the first, second, third and fourth measurements.

Methods for ultrafiltration control in hemodialysis

Methods and apparatus for increasing the accuracy of ultrafiltration in a dialysis machine and decreasing the time required for dialysis. The machine further includes an ultrafiltration pump for pumping fluid from an extracorporeal circuit to an ultrafiltration tank commensurate with the removal of water from the patient. The pump is calibrated with the volume of fluid in the tank. The reduction in the time to conduct hemodialysis of the patient is achieved by introducing the patient's blood into the arterial line and conducting the blood to the blood pump, measuring the pressure of the blood in the arterial line, increasing the pump rate of the blood pump, and in the event that the pressure measured in the arterial line drops below a predetermined threshold value, slowing the pump rate of the blood pump.

A method is described for determining the sodium clearance of a dialyzer. Dialysate containing sodium ions is circulated through the dialysate side of the dialyzer. Water is continuously circulated through the blood side of the dialyzer, the water being single passed through the blood side of the dialyzer. Measurements of the conductivity of the dialysate are made prior to the dialysate entering the dialyzer, and measurements of the conductivity of the dialysate are made after the dialysate has passed through the dialyzer. The clearance of the sodium ions by the dialyzer is calculated from the measurements of conductivity. The measurements of conductivity of the dialysate after passing through the dialyzer becomes substantially constant as the dialysate and water are circulated through the dialyzer. The sodium clearance corresponds to urea clearance of the dialyzer, since the two molecules are approximately the same size.

Alternately, juice from the artificial lime may be squeezed into the beer, or the artificial lime may be simply retrieved and discarded. Rather than needing to buy a natural lime, cut it up and push a wedge into a beer bottle, an artificial lime, or a packaged natural lime, may be stored directly in or with the beer bottle and placed in functional contact with the beer at time of consumption.

In order to provide for the maintenance of a long-term sterility of such a package filled with rinsing liquid it is suggested according to the invention that (i) at least one liquid drainage hole (7) is formed in the bottom of the eye-bowl (5), a closure means (9) for said hole (7) being supported from the inside of said cover (8), and (ii) the cover (8) is provided with an axial flange (10) closely surrounding the outer surface of said bowl (5) and being tearably welded thereto at its free edge, the closure cap (4) also being welded to the neck (2) of the bottle-like body (1).

The roller bottle comprises a closed bottle defining a longitudinal axis and having flexible plastic walls. Aseptically sealable means for access into the closed body are provided as well. A plurality of spaced reinforcement rings are defined in the flexible plastic walls about the longitudinal axis, to cause the body to normally retain a predetermined, generally cylindrical shape. The flexible plastic walls, apart from the rings, are made of a plastic formulation, and are of a thickness such that the oxygen and carbon dioxide diffusion which takes place through said walls is sufficient to support desired biochemical culturing processes taking place within the roller bottle without venting.

A one-piece plastics closure for a carbonated beverage bottle has a sealing ring (17) pivotally attached at the junction between its closure panel (10) and dependent skirt (11). The sealing ring is forked, having two annular and mutually divergent fins 20, 21. The upper fin (20) is engaged by the free end of the container neck as the closure is fitted, and by pivotal movement of the sealing ring brings the lower fin (21) into sealing relation with the side surface of the container finish. The resilience of the closure material and the substantial deformation to which the sealing ring is subject thereafter maintain the effectiveness of the seal despite creep and backing-off of the closure which may occur.
