A polyphase AC induction motor is connected to a power supply through a soft starter having three sets of inverse parallel connected silicon controlled rectifiers with each set corresponding to one particular phase. Low speed starting and operation of the motor can be accomplished through triggering circuits controlling the phases of the triggering pulses in relation to the phases of the supply. The low motor speeds are developed by a gating sequence that generates a low frequency waveform that is less than the main supply frequency to the motor. The present invention provides an estimate of the amount of time left on the battery by monitoring not only the voltage available from the battery, but also the amount of current flowing from the battery. It has been found that periodic sampling of the battery voltage and current drain enables accurate battery monitoring. The sampling technique alternates between sampling battery voltage and sampling current drain. An electric circuit is provided which enables the cost-effective sampling to occur. A method is then applied to the sampling signals by a microprocessor which determines the amount of time left under battery power. In a preferred embodiment, a graphic representation is provided of the amount of battery time left.

An irrigator ( 20 ) useful for surgical and medical procedures. The irrigator includes a handpiece ( 22 ) to which a tip assembly ( 30 ) is attached. The tip assembly includes a discharge tube ( 32 ) through which irrigating fluid is discharged. A spray head ( 422 ) with spaced-apart shoulders ( 422 ) is moveably attached to the front of the discharge tube. When the spray head is in a first position, the shoulders do not interfere with the discharge of irrigation fluid. When the spray head is in a second position, the shoulders are in registration over the discharge openings; the discharged irrigation fluid is dispersed by the shoulders. A spray shield ( 181 ) is disposed over the discharge tube. The irrigation fluid defused by the spray head shoulders strikes the spray shield which further diffuses this discharge.

A splash shield is removably attached to the ends of the discharge and suction tubes to limit fluid discharge. The splash shield is formed with a discharge chamber into which the fluid from the discharge chamber is discharged. The splash shield has a bore that leads from the discharge chamber to the suction tube through which fluid is drawn away from the discharge chamber. Seals between the discharge and suction tubes and the splash shield prevent fluid flow between the tubes and the splash shield.

The present invention provides an estimate of the amount of time left on the battery by monitoring not only the voltage available from the battery, but also the amount of current flowing from the battery. It has been found that periodic sampling of the battery voltage and current drain enables accurate battery monitoring. The sampling technique alternates between sampling battery voltage and sampling current drain. An electric circuit is provided which enables the cost-effective sampling to occur. A method is then applied to the sampling signals by a microprocessor which determines the amount of time left under battery power. In a preferred embodiment, a graphic representation is provided of the amount of battery time left.

Degenerative load temperature correction for charge pumps

A regulator circuit to control the output of a charge pump circuit, to reduce the effects of operating temperature and process variations on available output current from the charge pump circuit. A predetermined fraction of the output voltage of the charge pump circuit is fed back to the input of a differential amplifier, which compares it to a reference voltage. The output of the differential amplifier feeds a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), which in turn generates a clock signal that is used to drive the charge pump circuit. The normal temperature characteristics of this configuration cause the output of the charge pump circuit to degrade with temperature changes. The regulator circuit can be placed between the differential amplifier and the VCO to adjust the voltage driving the VCO. In one embodiment, a biasing resistor with a negative temperature coefficient can be used in the regulator circuit to offset the normal effects of temperature on the circuit. In another embodiment, multiple such resistors can be selectable with programmable logic, so that process variations during manufacture can be compensated for by selecting the resistor value that most closely provides optimal biasing.

An AC controller which provides programmable switching of AC power flow, together with producing a source of DC power for operating the AC controller. The AC controller is connected in series with only one side of the AC power source and the AC load. The AC controller utilizes a thyristor for AC power control switching. During the operation, the AC controller steals a small portion of each half-cycle of the AC power to provide DC power to the AC controller. The AC controller enables the flow of AC current by providing a gate current pulse at any predetermined time during the half cycle. Once the thyristor is ON, the AC current flows through the thyristor until the AC cycle is at or near zero. To provide an OFF state, the AC controller does not provide a gate current pulse. The AC controller uses an microcontroller for the programmable capability. The AC controller can be programmed to provide a flashing light function, a time delay off mode, an automatic fade mode, a dimming function, a burglar deterrent function, and a time delay dim function. With a three-position switch which can replace existing types of wall switches, three modes of operation are achieved: ON, OFF, and MODE. The mode position initiates operation of the special function of the controller.

Single phase to three phase power converter for motor loads

An apparatus for converting single phase input power to three phase output power supplied to a motor includes a pair of input lines, and a pair of DC bus lines, a pair of capacitors, a pair of diodes, and a pair of controlled switching devices which are each connected between the DC bus lines. One of the input lines is connected to the node between the capacitors and the other input line is connected to the node between the diodes. Two output lines are connected to the input line and a third output line is connected to the node between the two switching devices, with the three output lines being connected to a motor to supply three phase power to the motor. The switching devices are switched in a pulse width modulated manner to provide a voltage between the third output line and the other two output lines which provides the three phase power. During motor startup, at least one startup capacitor is switched in between one or both of the input lines and the output lines to provide startup torque for the motor. This capacitor is switched out after the motor has been started. A capacitor may also be switched in between the two input lines during startup to reduce the in-rush current on the input lines. Conversion of single phase to three phase power is obtained with only two active switching devices and a simple control strategy.

Power utilization circuit and power utilization control circuit incorporate first storage capacitor, first load, and second capacitor. Voltage comparator functions to control voltage across second capacitor to determine moment of its full charging. Logic circuit receives signals from voltage comparator and status logic to set switch in OFF-position when second capacitor is fully charged. Switch closure causes connection of second load in parallel with first one. A signal generating device and method for producing an RF output signal regulated in power and of decaying amplitude suitable for use in an electrosurgical generator for surgical coagulation purposes. The device includes a circuit tuned to a predetermined radio frequency suitable to prevent nerve stimulation and the tuned circuit has connected therewith an unregulated power supply with current through the tuned circuit being controlled by means of a solid state switching system. The tuned circuit includes an inductor initially charged to a predetermined energy level. The switching system is automatically controlled so that the switching system is repeatedly urged to the closed position at predetermined time intervals and remains in this position until the current through the tuned circuit reaches a predetermined level at which time the switching system is caused to open and the tuned circuit thereafter rings to produce a regulated output signal of decaying amplitude, this output being taken from the tuned circuit across a transformer and is well suited for surgical coagulation purposes wherein the electrical current passes from an electrode to body tissue in the form of an arc with power dissipation being far greater in the tissue than in the arc for best operation.

A high voltage, secondary winding of the transformer is loosely magnetically coupled to the primary winding. The frequency of oscillation of the oscillator circuit decreases as a load impedance across the secondary winding of the transformer decreases. In the case of arcing or shorting of an output circuit of the power supply the frequency of oscillation decreases below a pass band of the output circuit, thereby reducing the output current of the power supply.

Electrosurgery apparatus includes an r.f. power amplifier with an output to a patient electrode. The amplifier is controlled by the voltage of input signals from a control unit which receives a sample of the voltage and current of the output signal. The voltage and current signals are supplied to A/D converters to provide two digital signals that are used to address a look-up table in an EPROM and provide a digital output representative of impedance. A switch is set by the user to the desired mode/power curve and this provides a digital signal which together with the impedance signal is used to address a second look-up table in an EPROM which contains digital representations of the required output voltage of the amplifier to produce the desired power level. An adder compares the required voltage with a feedback of the actual voltage to produce an error signal that is supplied to the amplifier to control its output.

A regulator is responsive to an input signal proportional to the system supply voltage for adjusting the current flowing in the field windings of an electrical alternator which controls the output power thereof. The primary regulation loop of the regulator generates a pulse train having a duty cycle inversely proportional to the amplitude of the input signal while an oscillator provides a sawtooth signal at a predetermined frequency which controls the response frequency of the regulator. The regulator limits the rate of increase in the duty cycle of pulse train upon detecting a decrease in the system supply voltage by converting the duty cycle of the pulse train to a charging signal for developing a voltage across a capacitor proportional to the duty cycle of the pulse train. The voltage across the capacitor is compared to the sawtooth signal and triggers a latch which disables the output signal of the regulator as the duty cycle lengthens in response to the decrease in the system supply voltage. The voltage across the capacitor is increased each oscillator cycle until the duty cycle reaches the value required to support the output power of the alternator.
