A manufacturing method of water-absorbent agent powders of the present invention is a method of reducing an amount of a residue of an epoxy crosslinking agent remaining therein by adding a nucleophilic reagent in a form of powder to surface region crosslinked water-absorbent resin powders having a carboxyl group under an applied heat in which the residue of the crosslinking agent remains. Since the method permits an amount of the residue of the crosslinking agent to be reduced by adding a nucleophilic reagent to the heated water-absorbent resin powders, the water-absorbent agent powders exhibiting well-balanced properties which are mutually negatively correlated from one another, i.e., high absorbency under pressure, a reduced amount of a residue of the epoxy crosslinking agent and a high absorbing rate compared with the conventional surface region crosslinked water-absorbent resin powders can be achieved. Such water-absorbent agent powders are suitably used in sanitary materials such as disposable diaper, sanitary napkin, etc.

In addition to being freely flowable at a temperature near its softening temperature, a useful powder is disclosed that has a two-tier distribution in which substantially no primary particles have an average diameter greater than 180 νm, provided further that the number average ratio of particles smaller than 53 νm is greater than 80 %, the remaining larger particles being in the size range from 53 νm to 180 νm. A powder with slow recrystallization rates, as evidenced by non-overlapping endothermic and exothermic peaks in their differential scanning calorimetry characteristics for scan rates of on the order of 10 °C to 20 °C per minute, will also result in sintered parts that are near-fully dense, with minimal dimensional distortion.

A process for preparing permeable membranes which comprises kneading in the molten state two different kinds of thermoplastic synthetic resins which are partly compatible with each other, fabricating the molten mixture into a sheet, film or hollow article, treating the fabricated article with a solvent which is a good solvent for one of the component resins but is a poor solvent for the other to dissolve and remove the former resin, drying the fabricated article, and then stretching it. In place of the resin to be removed by the solvent, rubbers or oligomers having partial compatibility with the resin which remains undissolved can be used.

Provided is a method for manufacturing a molding roofing material for an automobile, which is subjected to press molding. In this way, it is possible to recycle and obtain a lightweight and high hardness molded roofing material for automobiles.

Foamed thermoplastic materials such as coatings, adhesives and structural bodies are made by a method which offers significant advantages and economies. The method involves the steps of stabilizing a dispersion of gas in a molten thermoplastic material by adding a surfactant to the molten material in a sufficient stabilizing amount and subsequently pressurizing the stabilized dispersion to form a hot solution. Thereafter, the hot solution is dispensed under lower pressure whereby the gas is released from solution to form a foamed material. The method is especially advantageous in making hot melt thermoplastic adhesives which are very useful in bonding substrates with efficiency and superior bond strengths. Continuous and reliable foaming operations are achieved with a uniform quality and output of foamed materials. Thermoplastic materials are also capable of being foamed with relatively simple mechanical apparatus and under conditions which provide considerable savings of energy. The number of thermoplastic materials which can be foamed employing the present technique in a controlled manner is unlimited. The method of stabilization is conducted at low or ambient pressures and resulting stabilized hot thermoplastic-gas dispersions may then be pumped with pressurization and dispensed with immediate foaming.

Disclosed are degradable materials including molded products, laminates, foams, nonwoven materials, adhesives, coatings and films, and particularly packaging films. The materials are made using polydioxaneone polymers comprising at least two different dioxaneone-based repeating units. Preferred polymers are polydioxanediones. First repeating units have less carbon atoms in constituent groups extending from the polymer backbone than second repeating units. Physical characteristics and degradation of the materials can be varied by varying the choice and/or relative proportions of first and second repeating units in the polydioxaneone polymers. Methods for preparing polydioxaneone polymers that can be used in the manufacture of the materials are also discussed, as are suitable monomers and methods for preparing such monomers.

Thermoplastic polymer foams having sound deadening properties satisfactory for demanding applications are provided which have mechanical strength, which are economical to manufacture, and which are hydrolytically stable. Methods of preparing these foams are also provided. The foams are useful in sound management, cushion packaging, filtering, and fluid absorption and exhibit one or more of the following properties: 1) average cell size greater than about 2 mm; 2) substantially open-cell structure and 3) relatively large pores connecting the cells. In order that the foam be acoustically active, the foam should possess a substiantially open-cell structure and a relatively low airflow resistivity. Foams with substantially open-cell structure and relatively low airflow resistivity are prepared by mechanically opening a foam having an average cell size greater than about 2 mm. In most cases, such mechanical opening creates relatively large pores connecting the cells.

A crosslinked, soft, flexible, closed-cell foam of chlorinated high density polyethylene and a process for the preparation thereof, comprising admixing a high density chlorinated polyethylene with a thermally decomposable chemical foaming agent at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of said foaming agent, molding the chlorinated high density polyethylene into desired form at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the foaming agent, subjecting the molded chlorinated high density polyethylene to irradiation cross-linking at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of said foaming agent and contacting, in a substantially oxygen-free environment, the crosslinked chlorinated high density polyethylene with a heat transfer medium maintained at a temperature of from about 150° C. to about 350° C. for a period sufficient to form the desired product.

The invention relates to the process of the invention provides a radiation-crosslinked polypropylene foam by extrusion at a low temperature (about 170° C.) below the decomposition point of the blowing agent. The resulting foamed item has by far better heat resistance than conventional ones. The raw resin can be prepared by mixing a resin in the pellet form and a blowing agent in the powder form on account of the low-temperature flowability. Heretofore, such mixing was impossible because the blowing agent does not disperse completely. This outstanding effect of the invention was not expected at all from the known prior arts.
