An organo-trihalosilane, in which the organo radical is an alkyl or an alkenyl radical, is subjected to direct alkaline hydrolysis with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide to give an aqueous solution of a hydrolysis product suitable for use in providing silicone coatings on fabrics. In general, an ethereal solution of the trihalosilane is hydrolysed with excess alkali solution to give a solution which has a lower surface tension than an alkali solution of comparable concentration and may be used to wet out textile materials and, by neutralization after impregnation of a fabric produces siloxane resins in situ. In examples: (1) to (15) aqueous alkaline solutions are prepared by the hydrolysis by caustic potash or soda of trichlorosilanes having methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec.-butyl, tert.-butyl, methallyl, amyl, 2-ethyl-hexyl, n-octyl, lauryl, octadecyl and oleyl radicals; (16) n-butyltrifluorosilane is hydrolysed by sodium hydroxide; (17) n-butyltrichlorosilane is hydrolysed by lithium hydroxide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also substitution by other organo radicals and the preparation of solid compounds by treating an organo-trihalosilane with liquid or aqueous ammonia to form a precipitate, dissolving the precipitate in ether and treating the solution with solid or alcoholic caustic alkali. A device is described which permits automatic, uniform, and precise shearing of cloth pieces, including those areas near the seams, and which thus minimizes the economic loss due to non-sheared areas of cloth. The device employs the logic processing of information continuously delivered by a detector which measures the thickness of the cloth at a point before it reaches the shearing cylinder. This information is processed in an electronic system so as to adjust properly the width of the shearing slit in synchronism with the movement of the cloth. By the technique described herein, spurious signals of thickness information caused by the presence of a seam are discarded and replaced by certain fictitious signals that will bring about the desired height of pile in the sheared cloth in the areas near the seams, while nevertheless permitting the seam to pass through the shearing slit.

This is to prevent the deterioration of the cutting quality, and thereby the shape of the granules, due to the progressive wear of the bed knife or to prevent down-times during the changing of the knife. Cellulosic textile material is dyed with substantive dyes or preferably with reactive dyes. Dyeing is carried out by applying to the cellulosic material, by a non-pad method, an aqueous dye liquor which contains, in addition to the dye, a graft polymer which is obtained from an adduct of an alkylene oxide, preferably propylene oxide, with an at least trihydric aliphatic alcohol, e.g. glycerol, and acrylamide or methacrylamide. The cellulosic material is then subjected to a heat treatment, e.g. by steaming or with microwaves, or is preferably stored cold, to fix the dyes. A process for the continuous dyeing of plastic films, such as polyethylene terephthalate, is characterized by passing the film through a dye bath comprised of dye stuffs dissolved, suspended or dispersed in a liquid carrier comprised at least in part of a polymer, preferably a polyol, having at least one free hydroxyl group and a molecular weight within the range of from about 200 to about 600. The hydrogen bonding provided by the hydroxyl group, together with the high molecular weight and high boiling point of the polyol, mitigate against migration of the dye stuff out of the film, i.e., fading of the film, and impart long lasting color fastness to the film. Rapid diffusion of the dye bath into the film is enhanced by thermal and ultrasonic energization of the bath.

A process is described for printing dyes onto textile material comprising the steps of forming a latent magnetic image in a magnetic imaging member comprising a ferromagnetic material on an electrically conductive support; developing the magnetic image by applying thereto a ferromagnetic toner comprising a ferromagnetic component, a dye component which is substantially sublimable at less than 215° C., and resin which substantially encapsulates the ferromagnetic component and the dye component; transferring the developed image to a substrate comprising a continuous belt comprising a thermally stable, dielectric, non-dye-receptive material; transferring the developed image by heat and pressure to film of a thermally stable resin which is permeable to said dye component laminating paper or a film to the image bearing side of the film, and bringing the laminated film into contact with a textile material to be dyed while the film and fabric are rotated upon a heated drum, to thereby transfer said dye component from the film or films to the textile material. In a preferred aspect of the invention another film is laminated to the side of the film supporting the image and the dye is simultaneously sublimed to two textile materials several times.

The transfer sheet or web is intended for the use in a heat transfer printing process of cotton, of cotton-polyester blend or of nitrogen containing textile fibers such as wool, silk or nylon. It comprises on its surface at least one organic impregnating agent which has a melting point between 60° and 230° C. and is no polymer, at least one water insoluble, non-subliming dyestuff, and the minimum amount of a binder. The dyestuff forms a pattern or image which is heat contact printed on said textile substrate without the use of carrier vapors or vacuum. The pattern to be heat transferred may also be prepared in an electrophotographic process using a new toner comprising particles of impregnating agent, binder and dyestuff. The pattern on the transfer support is transferred at a temperature between 160° and 230° C. during 30 to 60 seconds to said textile substrate. The printings obtained have very good light, rubbing and washing fastnesses; the handling is not impaired.

In a process for transfer pattern printing of a moist textile web consisting wholly or predominantly of natural fibers, in particular cotton, and/or artificial fibers on the basis of cellulose, the pattern carrier web is a web of paper or a paper-like material which carries a pre-printed pattern of a water soluble or dispersable dye. After wetting of the textile web to a carefully controlled moisture, the textile web is joined with the pattern carrier web and the joined webs are compressed at a suitable pressure so that the pattern can be transferred without using heat. The advantage is that it will be possible to avoid both heating and use of organic solvents. It is also possible to transfer a pattern to a colored textile web since the textile web may be wetted before hand with an aqueous dye solution or dispersion instead of undyed liquid.

At least the lower part of each rod has a spiral outer surface. The cutter section includes a cutter of hollow conical form having a series of spiral channels on its interior surface, each spiral ending in an aperture, the apertures forming cutting edges. Potatoes are fed through the feed section, on rotation of the rods, by the spiral surfaces of the rods, and pushed into the cutter, which on rotation, cuts helical pieces from potatoes.

An improved method of dyeing a polyolefin material, and preferably a polypropylene based fiber, involves a disperse dye mix including a selected plurality of disperse dyes from the same primary color group. Each dye within the mix and the concentration of each dye within the mix is selected by testing individual disperse dye solutions with an undyed sample and determining the maximum dye concentration which will produce an acceptable crocking test for that dye. A plurality of disperse dyes within the mix are each at a concentration of at least 75% of the maximum dye concentration for that individual dye. The selected dye mix is used to prepare a disperse dye mix solution which is then contacted with the polyolefin material to reliably dye the material without fastness problems. A red dye mix, a blue dye mix, and the yellow dye mix may each be prepared and may each be separately used to dye polypropylene fibers with relatively dark shade without crocking problems. Different proportions of each of the three dye mixes may be used to dye polypropylene fibers at various selected shades and color depths.
