Variable-volume injection valves include a stator and a rotor. The stator has a first port, a second port, and a contact surface with a groove therein. The first port opens into the stator groove. The rotor has a contact surface with a groove therein. The contact surface of the rotor is urged against the contact surface of the stator such that the rotor groove opposes the stator groove with one end of the rotor groove overlapping the stator groove and the opposite end of the rotor groove overlapping the second port of the stator. The overlapping grooves of the rotor and stator provide a fluidic channel between the first and second ports of the stator. The servovalve incorporates a rotating plate valving element which connects between the valve ports through cavities formed inside it. The valving element cavities are formed symmetrically in both the valving elements sides, where each pair of symmetrical cavities is optionally separated by a stiffening web. Holes through the webs connect between the symmetrical cavities. The control orifices are formed between some edges in the valving element cavities and edges of cavities in adjacent fixed elements surrounding the valving element and properly designed for this purpose. The flow ducts inside the valves are formed by the cavities in the valving element and the adjacent parts to provide enough flowing cross sectional areas. The control orifices are formed in pairs at both valving element sides to duplicate the area and provide symmetry for flow forces lateral components balance. Each portion of the valving elements is subjected to the same pressure at its both sides to provide static balance. The rotational movement generates relatively large control orifice from rotary or linear drivers of short strokes. Thin valving elements with cavities provide lowest inertia for high speed of response.

A service valve assembly that is designed to minimize leakage by reducing the number of leakage paths from the valve assembly. In addition, the service valve assembly is designed to permit connection to many different refrigeration systems and has higher flow capacity. The valve assembly is engageable by current servicing tools so that purchase of new service tools is not required. In the valve assembly, the service connection is designed as part of the shut-off valve and communicates with the condenser side port. An air switch comprises a switch body having a recess thereon and a switching member having an output connection port. The recess is connected to vacuum and pressure outlets through passages in the switch body. The vacuum passage is connected to a port on the wall of the recess while the pressure passage is connected to a partially circularly extending channel on the recess wall. The switching member is rotatably received in the recess and includes a radially extending channel on its inner wall. Positioning of the switching member in the vacuum or pressure modes places the member channel in fluid communication with either the vacuum port or the channel on the recess wall. When in the vacuum mode, the pressure channel is vented to the atmosphere and when in the pressure mode, the vacuum is similarly vented. When in the minimum pressure mode, a portion of the pressure is vented to the atmosphere although this pressure venting is reduced to zero when the switching member is in the maximum pressure mode. In a preferred construction, the switch is operable only when a vacuum filter connects the source of vacuum to the switch body.

In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the 0-rings 13, 14 are replaced by a single O- ring (23) placed obliquely around the mandrel. In this embodiment flow is controlled by rotating the valve member by a cap as in Fig. 1. The small axial movement of the valve member is insufficient to affect flow. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), generally similar to that of Fig. 2, only a short length of the cap and valve body are screw threaded and on assembly the cap is screwed to a point at which the threads dis-engage so that on rotation there is no axial movement of the valve member. In a yet further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), for a simple two-way valve similar to that of Fig. 1, the cap is a sliding fit on the body and is operated by push/pull. The spaces between the ridges form passageways through which a port 44 may be connected with a port 42 or 43 when the valve member is moved axially by rotating a cap 45. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the two middle ridges of Figs. 1 and 2 are replaced by a single ridge (64) placed obliquely around the mandrel. Flow is controlled by rotating the valve member by a cap (56) which does not transmit axial movement to the member. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), for a simple two-way valve, similar to that of Fig. 2, the cap is a sliding fit on the body and is operated by push/pull. In a yet further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), for a straight-through two-way valve, there are two circumferential ridges, one on each side of the aligned ports, and flow is controlled by two axially arranged ridges joining the circumferential ridges. These axial ridges are so spaced circumferentially that flow is controlled by rotating the valve member. In all the embodiments, the sleeve may be of PTFE, polyethylene, nylon, polypropylene or tetrafluorethylene - hexafluoropropylene copolymers.
