A control system is further provided and operable to position the cutting head relative to the workpiece at a standoff distance based at least in part on the information indicative of the position of the cutting head relative to the workpiece obtained by the measurement device. Fibrous mineral products, like fiberglass insulation blankets, are cut into lanes or segments using at least one oil-jet cutter that uses high velocity oil to cut a kerf in the blanket. The used or spent oil that is dispersed by the fibers is collected in a separate oil reclamation system that keeps the oil distinct from washwater. The collected oil is filtered, recycled and re-pressurized for additional cutting. Oil is advantageous over water for preserving recovery properties, producing comfortable hand, and reducing the use of de-dusting agents in the process.

Mobile phones have an electronic display protected by a glass shield. Between the glass and the display is often a plastic polarizing or other intermediary sheet. The present disclosure relates to processing a substrate including at least one sheet of paper, cardboard or carton by directing a jet stream of liquid nitrogen to a surface of the substrate via a jet nozzle; and by moving the jet nozzle at a distance from the surface. The jet stream can be unmodulated or modulated. For example, the jet stream can be modulated by a modulation unit such as to reduce the impact of the jet stream on the surface. In this way, the jet stream can be applied to score folding lines into the substrate. An unmodulated or on/off modulated jet stream can be applied to cut lines into the substrate. Thus, by applying an appropriate modulation to the jet stream, the processing can switch between cutting the substrate and scoring folding lines into the substrate. 1. A method of processing a fluid sensitive substrate , comprising:providing a fluid container for receiving liquid nitrogen;arranging the fluid sensitive substrate on a processing surface;directing a jet stream of said liquid nitrogen to the fluid sensitive substrate via at least one jet nozzle connected to the fluid container; andmoving a holding unit, wherein the holding unit holds the jet nozzle at a distance from a surface of the fluid sensitive substrate to score the fluid sensitive substrate to form fold lines.2. A method and apparatus for the excision and removal of tissue, such as the lens of the eye includes a pencil-like handpiece having a cannula probe extending from the distal end thereof. The probe includes an inner jet tube to direct a high pressure jet of fluid toward a tissue target, and an outer concentric aspiration tube to aspirate and remove fluid and tissue. The jet tube is recessed proximally within the concentric aspiration tube, and the aspiration tube has an end area significantly larger than the end area of the jet tube. These factors cooperate so that the negative pressure exerted by the aspiration tube creates a suction force that offsets and exceeds the force of the fluid jet. The jet tube is connected to a fluid pressure system including a positive displacement pump, a pressure regulator, safety release, control valve, and a pulse former. The jet tube emits pulses of high pressure fluid that impinge reiteratively on the target, creating shock waves that fracture and emulsify the lens tissue, and the fluid also acts as a solvent to transport the emulsified tissue into the aspiration tube. The handpiece also includes a vacuum bypass port disposed to be selectively occluded by a finger of the surgeon, so that vacuum pressure may be released immediately when needed.

Cutting strengthened glass

Cutting strengthened glass by means of a high velocity fluid jet. A suitable fluid is placed under high pressure and directed against the surface of the glass in a highly collimated stream of small diameter at high velocity. Very fine abrasive particles are aspirated into the high velocity stream prior to its impingement upon the glass to serve as a cutting medium for the strengthened glass. The pressure of the fluid is reduced when starting the cut to avoid venting of the glass during initial penetration, and the pressure is then increased for movement of the fluid jet along the desired line of cut. The relationship between fluid pressure, line speed and abrasive grit size is carefully controlled to produce a smooth cut free from vents and chips so as to avoid failure of the strengthened unit.

The fluid is discharged from the smaller orifices at a pressure of at least 500 psig, and the fluid is discharged from the larger orifices at a pressure less than 500 psig.

Provided is a method in which suitably calcined aggregate is hermetically sealed inside a graphite vessel and then subjected to hot isostatic pressing (HIP) employing isotropic gas pressure, and using hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and other gases generated from the filler as the starting material, gas-phase growth of the graphite and precipitation around and inside the filler are allowed to occur such that a single structure is formed by the carbide aggregate and the graphite allowed to precipitate with gas-phase growth. Nanocarbon materials can be selectively and efficiently produced by adding a catalyst and adjusting the HIP treatment temperature, and the like.

The scarfing blade and the guillotine blade each are secured to their respective holders by a cam pin which coacts with a cam surface to bring an eccentric portion of the cam pin into wedging coaction with the blade in response to rotation of the pin and firmly and wedgingly secure the blade to its respective holder. The blade may be removed from the respective holder by simply rotating the cam pin a fraction of a revolution and then withdrawing the blade. A new or reground blade is replaced in the respective holder by simple insertion into the holder and rotation of the cam pin a fraction of a revolution in the opposite direction.

A fluid jet cutting system is described having a nozzle (12) through which a fluid jet is directed for cutting a workpiece (15). The workpiece (15) is supported using pins (17) each of which is provided with an alignment device in the form of a generally tubular body (104) provided with a through hole (106). The relative positions of the nozzle and workpiece (15) can be adjusted until the fluid jet passes through the through hole (106) with minimum disturbance. In alternative embodiments, the alignment device may be provided by a cap permanently affixed in an alignment plate, or it may be constituted by the pin (17) itself. The alignment system provides a simple method for visually verifying the jet alignment to a reference point before controlled cutting is carried out.

This invention relates to apparatus and methods for z-axis control and collision detection and recovery for waterjet and abrasive-jet cutting systems. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a linear rail, a slide member coupleable to a cutting head and slideably coupled to the linear rail, at least one actuator having a first end coupled to the slide member and a second end fixed with respect to the linear rail, a position sensor, and a controller. The actuator provides an adjustable support force that supports the weight of the cutting head, allowing the cutting head to be controllably positioned at a desired height above the workpiece. The actuator may include a pneumatic cylinder, or alternately, a linear motor. In another aspect, an apparatus includes a first mount member coupleable to a controllably positionable mounting surface of the waterjet cutting system, a second mount member coupleable to the cutting head and disengageably coupled to the first mount member, and a sensing circuit having a plurality of first conductive elements disposed on the first mount member and a plurality of second conductive elements disposed on the second mount member. In the event of a collision between the cutting head and an obstruction, the second mount member disengages from the first mount member to prevent breakage of the cutting head. Following the collision, the second mount member is quickly and easily re-engaged with the first mount member without time-consuming re-calibration. In one embodiment, re-engagement of the second end first mount members is automatically performed by a biasing member.

The method is characterized by moving each saw 2 of the sawing unit during the sawing radially towards the centre of the pipe until the saw blades pass through the inner surface of the pipe, and rotating the pipe during the sawing with respect to its longitudinal axis by means of a rotating device 10 connected to the fastener until the pipe is cut off, whereby, due to the rotating of the pipe, the blades 25 of the saw 2 work the pipe during a blade revolution only in one direction, which is directed from the outer circumference towards the inner circumference.
