Abstract When making wood chips by means of a transportable chopping apparatus, the power of a machine may be in-sufficient for continuous chopping of a wood load positioned on a feeding means. Thus, the chopping operation must be intermittently stopped by manual control or automatically in order to reset the sufficient number of revolutions. Otherwise the number of revolutions will fall below a critical value, a chopper may be clogged and a machine indeed stopped. The knives of a chopper usually have a powerful self-feed, in other words, while chiiping the wood said knives also pull a log in the feeding direction. Thus, mere stopping of the feeding means is not always enough to stop the chopping but, under the pulling action of said knives, a piece of wood moves even through a stopped feeding means. An object of the present invention is a feed breaking method in a transportable chopping apparatus, the main principle of said method being to automatically effect a short, impulse-like reverse run cycle for a feeding means in conjunction with stopping of the feed. During this cycle a piece of wood releases itself off the grip of the chopper knives, whereby the chopping is interrupted.

A safety system prevents cutting machine operators from being accidentally carried through the infeed chute into the machine's cutting mechanism. An operator wears a safety device on his wrist and/or ankle and a sensor array mounts on opposing sides of the cutting machine's infeed chute. The present invention provides a web perforating apparatus which includes a system for detecting and indicating when a blade in the apparatus is broken, dull or otherwise not perforating the web. The apparatus is typically used with rewinders or other similar machines that produce perforated sheets of products, such as paper, using sets of stationary anvil blades and rotating perforating blades. The apparatus comprises at least one anvil including a blade holder and an anvil blade which is positioned within the blade holder. The blade holder is formed of an insulating material for electrically isolating the anvil blade from the machine frame of the rewinder. An electrical conductor is coupled to the anvil blade for supplying an electric current to the anvil blade from a current source. The apparatus also includes at least one grounded perforating blade for moving relative to the anvil blade and cooperating with the anvil blade to perforate the web at predetermined points along its length. The perforating blade will contact the anvil blade after perforating the web. A closed circuit is formed and maintained along the anvil blade at points where the blades are in contact with each other. The apparatus further includes means for detecting if a closed circuit has been formed and maintained along the anvil blade when the perforating blade moves into a position where the blades should contact each other.

The invention has utility generally for monitoring any part for severance of the part. The invention is specifically useful for monitoring severance of a tension blade in a tension blade grid. The wireless connection is achieved with a transmit/receive unit using radiofrequency power transfer for electrical power and using infrared transmitters and receivers for signal transfer. For food processing, specifically for a vegetable cutting method employing at least one tension blade in a first tension blade grid through which vegetables are passed for cutting the vegetables wherein the at least one tension blade is severed during the cutting, the invention provides for diverting the vegetables to a second tension blade grid. Diversion is accomplished with an acoustic emission sensor acoustically coupled to the at least one tension blade so that during the vegetable cutting, the acoustic emission sensor detects acoustic energy from tension blade severance. The acoustic energy is converted to an electronic signal that is compared in a microprocessor to a threshold. In a severance condition, an actuator receives an alarm signal from the microprocessor and diverts the vegetables to the second tension blade grid.

A knife projection sensing system for cutting machines having a rotatable surface adapted to retain a plurality of cutting knives. The system employs a plurality of sensors mountable to the cutting machine to be stationary with respect to the rotatable surface. ABSTRACT OF INVENTION The invention relates to existing band saws powered by elec-trical motors. Prior arts of band saws are commonly designed with two wheels as support and glide path for band saws blades. They were commonly revealed through patent search such as: #2, 711, 195 inventor John A. Hill; patent #3, 480, 051 inventor Charles E. Gray; patent #3, 902, 391 inventor Harold Bond; patent #3, 908, 501 inventor Tsuneo Aizawa; and patent #4, 128, 031 inventor Masso Sato. My invention incorporates four wheels to form the saw blade glide or travel path. Therefore, the primary object of my invention, having four wheels, eliminates the large bulky wheels used for achieving height and depth Depth being the distance between the blade and frame. Height being the distance between the working surface area and the bottom portion of the guard. Prior arts have 2-24" wheels on the large models to achieve a 22" width of cut. Being such a large wheel, it has to be con-structed of heavy and warp free material. It also has to be per-fectly balanced to achieve smooth operation and requires larger bearings. To turn all these heavy metal wheels leads to more pow-er input. Normally a band saw of this size will take 2 to 5 HP electric motor, thus, overall height and weight of saw is gross. To achieve height of cut at 12", this type of saw needs two wheels of 24", which equals 48" plus the 12" height of the cut plus the guard and base stand. Overall height of the saw would be approx-imately 8" tall and weighing in at 1000 lb. It is another primary object of present saw to reduce height, weight, bulk, and power consumed. It can also be used as wall mounted or on a fixed or mobile stand that could incorporate brake leaded casters, thus making it a more compact and lighter, yet achieving same cutting depth or clearance being as stated. A safety system prevents cutting machine operators from being accidentally carried through the infeed chute into the machine's cutting mechanism. An operator wears a safety device on his wrist and/or ankle and a sensor array mounts on opposing sides of the cutting machine's infeed chute. The sensor array elements are wound in opposite directions and connect in series opposing. The magnetic field of the safety device induces a current in the sensor array as it moves in the proximity of the sensor array. The safety system generates a signal which is proportional to the sum of the induced currents. When the signal exceeds a threshold, the safety system shuts off power to the feed mechanism and/or the cutting blades of the cutting machine, preventing injury to the operator.

Improperly mounted wafer saw blades can damage wafers cut or diced with the blades. Embodiments of this invention employ sensors to measure a distance to the blade to help indicate if the blade is improperly mounted. In one method of the invention, a the distance to the blade face is measured as the blade is rotated and a variance in this measured distance is determined. If the variance is no greater than a predetermined maximum, the blade may be used to cut the wafer. In one apparatus of the invention, a wafer saw include a blade and a sensor. The sensor is adapted to monitor a distance to a face of the rotating blade. A processor coupled to the sensor may indicate if the distance to the face of the blade as it rotates deviates too far from a baseline position of the blade face.
