848,456. Cutting-devices. SCHULPEN, K. H. N. Nov. 19, 1956 [Nov. 21, 1955; Feb. 13, 1956], No. 35252/56. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XXX] A device for cutting or dividing yieldably deformable material 5 comprises at least one cutting-knife 6 or like dividing means arranged such that the cutting plane or planes pass between one or more sets of co-operating plates, cylinders or other means having projections and/or recesses for deforming the material prior to cutting. After cutting, the outer surfaces of the material return to their undeformed shape and the cut surfaces to a shape depending upon the amount of deformation caused by the projections and/or recesses. The plates may be in the form of endless conveyers 1, 2, Fig. 1, moving together to feed the material to the knife. In a further embodiment, the material is compressed between the undulating surfaces of two plates, either or both of which may move to compress the material. In another embodiment, undulations are formed on the periphery of cylinders 8, 9, Fig. 3, which rotate together to deform and feed the material to the knife 6. The projections are staggered, and may be of varying sizes, or extend across the cutting-plane and consist of two parts, one part 31, Fig. 9, of rubber, cork or like material, which is cut by the knife, being located on the other part 30 screwed to one (28) of the plates. The knife is preferably of the type having two plate or strip-shaped knives rapidly reciprocated relatively to each other, arranged substantially side-by-side and subjected to spring action. Specification 848,457 is referred to.
