The invention relates to a yarn tensioner (10) for setting the yarn tension of a running yarn (2), which is formed as a brake tensioner having a first tensioning element (12) with at least one first deflection element (14) and a second tensioning element (13) with at least one second deflection element (15). The first tensioning element (12) and the second tensioning element (13) are arranged opposite each other and can be adjusted relative to each other by a translational adjustment movement in order to set the yarn tension. The first tensioning element (12) and the second tensioning element (13) define a yarn running direction (GR). The at least one first deflection element (14) and the at least one second deflection element (15) are arranged at an acute angle (W) relative to each other in a direction transverse to the yarn running direction (GR). A workstation (1) of a textile machine, preferably a yarn winder, has such a yarn tightener (10).
