This clothes dryer (1) is provided with a drying chamber (9), an air path (10) which circulates drying air discharged from the drying chamber (9) into the drying chamber (9), a heat pump device (7) which is provided inside of the air path (10) and which is linked to a compressor (2), a condenser (3), an expansion device (4) and an evaporator (5) by a conduit (6) circulating a coolant, a fan (8) which blows air in the air path (10), a discharge unit (13) which discharges water towards the evaporator (5), and a control unit (16) which controls drying operation. Further, the control unit (16) performs control such that after water has been discharged from the discharge unit (13), the compressor (2) is actuated. By this means, lint can be removed and without scale adhering to the evaporator (5).

Provided is a washing machine in which an operation/display section (5) is used to set an operation course for successively performing a sterilization/deodorizing step and a washing step, and to make a setting for a reserved operation of the operation course. During the reserved operation that has been set, when a predetermined time is reached, a sterilization/deodorizing device (3) is intermittently operated for predetermined ON/OFF durations. Then, clothing (20) in the washing tub (2) is caused to release an efficacy substance, such as charged microparticle water. Thereafter, the washing step is operated. In this way, it is possible to suppress the growth of germs that have become attached to the clothing (20) in the washing tub (2), and a resultant increase in odor. The intermittent operation makes it possible to provide a washing machine with which an increase in durability of devices and a decrease in energy consumption can be achieved.
