The present invention relates to an air conditioner and a method for controlling the same. The present invention recognizes an operation mode for a generator power supply and thereby sets a generator mode, and when setting the generator mode, controls the operation frequency of a compressor so that power consumption of an air conditioner, which is computed from the voltage, does not exceed a reference value for the generator mode. Thereby, even if an unstable low-voltage, low-capacity power supply is inputted, the present invention controls the power consumption of the air conditioner and thus maintains operation, resulting in an effect of providing cooling performance and simultaneously enabling long-term continuous operation. In addition, the present invention prevents damage to the compressor and can carry out consistent operation regardless of the power supply being supplied, resulting in great improvement in user convenience.
