9743. Deike, A. H., Alexander, A. W., and Mitchell, J. May 9. Acetylene.-Relates to apparatus for generating acetylene by automatically supplying carbide to water. The generator 1 is provided with two or more carbide holders 6, which are inserted through openings 12 which can be closed airtight. Each holder rests upon two rods 11, and is formed with a bottom composed of a number of independent hinged sections 9. At first these sections are held in the closed position by supports 16 pivoted on rods 15, 15, there being one support for each section. The supports are thrown one at a time on one side, so as to let a section fall each time the bell of the holder sinks. The bell in descending engages with the hooked end of a rod 28 connected to a bellcrank lever 26, 27, the other end of which is connected by a link 25 to a second bell-crank lever 23, 24, from which motion is imparted by a link 22 to a lever 21 having a dog 21 which engages the teeth of a ratchet-wheel 20, and thereby causes the latter to rotate slightly each time the bell descends. The ratchet-wheel 20 is mounted upon a shaft 17, upon which are spirally arranged a series of projecting pins. which successively operate the supports 16 of the carbide sections. Pinions 19, 19, rigidly mounted on the shafts 17, 17 and gearing together, cause the sections of each holder to be released simultaneously. The gas passes to the holder by the pipe 31.
