This enables the flexion and extension gaps to be checked before the femoral cuts are made. The epicondyles can be located using intramedullary or extramedullary referencing. A special extramedullary locating device (10) is also described which is referenced to the trochlear groove of the femur and enables the placement of pins (38) in the epicondyles so that the gap checking device (40) can be properly situated with respect to the femur.

Shaped articles made from molded ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with an average molecular weight of between about 1 million and about 10 million and exhibiting a low modulus of elasticity throughout the shaped article or in selected regions of the shaped article are disclosed. These articles are produced by filling a mold with powdered UHMWPE, covering the mold with a piston, raising the temperature of the mold and its contents to between about 140° and about 225° C. while simultaneously applying a pressure of between about 2.5 and about 15 MPa to the mold and its contents, maintaining the pressure and temperature for between about 5 and about 25 minutes, with the time selected dependent upon the thickness of the molded part, then dropping the temperature of the molded part, either completely or in part at a rate between about 4° and about 175° C./minute either while maintaining the mold at the molding pressure, at pressure less than the molding pressure or under no external applied pressure. The shaped articles so produced exhibit a combination of properties including an elastic modules between about 500 MPA and about 800 MPA, a yield strength equal to or greater than about 20 Mpa, an elongation to rupture of greater than about 300%, crystallinity and density less than or equal to about that of the native powdered UHMWPE used to form the part and a melting point less than or equal to about that of native UHMWPE powder that has experienced melting and cooling at ambient pressure. The shaped articles are useful as the bearing surface of total knee joints, prosthetic hip joint cups and as other prosthetic shapes for replacement of other joints of the human body.

In each IOTA, the drain region of the ion-sensitive transistor may be connected to the drain region of the load transistor. A differential sensor may be connected to the IOTAs, and an output from the differential sensor may indicate a voltage difference between the IOTA outputs. The output from the differential sensor may be used to provide an indication of a change in pH.

In this way, a high assay reproducibility is obtained. By allowing a short, well-defined and controlled, pre-incubation time between the particles of interest, e.g. drugs, in the sample fluid (20) and the reagent (4), the reproducibility will be increased, whereas the speed of the assay is guaranteed by having all components in one detection region (2), e.g. detection chamber.

The invention may be embodied as a glare detection system or as a method of detecting glare. In a system according to the invention, there may be a light receiving surface, a first input channel, a second input channel, a glare signaling circuit and a glare reducing circuit. The first input channel may provide an indication of the amount of light impinging on a first portion of the light receiving surface. The second input channel may provide an indication of the amount of light impinging on a second portion of the light receiving surface. The glare signaling circuit ("GSC") may have a first input port in communication with the first input channel, a second input port in communication with the second input channel, a logic-or gate capable of producing an output signal when the logic-or gate detects that the first input channel or the second input channel indicates glare on the light receiving surface. The glare reducing circuit ("GRC") may be in communication with the logic-or gate, and may be capable of reacting when the logic-or gate produces the output signal. For example, the GRC may react by determining where on the light receiving surface glare exists.

After the fluid has been supplied to the foam members (5 a, 5b), the positioning member (6) is moved towards the end (4) of the carrier (3) where the foam members (5a, 5b) are located. When the diagnostic device (2) comes into contact with one of the foam members (5a, 5b), the fluid is squeezed from the foam member (5a) and supplied to the sensitive surface of the sensor die (40), through the fluid supplying means of the diagnostic device (2).
