The invention comprises alkoxy silanes of the general formula: Ry Si[(OCnH2n)a (OCmH2m)bX]4-y wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical optionally substituted with chlorine, X is a monovalent radical derived from a compound XH in which H is a hydrogen atom reactive with a cyclic oxide, y is 0, 1 or 2; n is 2, 3 or 4, m is 3 or 4, a is 0 or an integer and b is greater than 4, which are used in the preparation of polyurethane foams. The silanes may be prepared by reacting silica tetrachloride or an appropriate chloro-silane with (a) monohydric alcohols of general formula H(OCnH2n)a (OCmH2m)bX wherei X, a, b, n and m have the values above, in presence of pyridine and acid binding agent, (b) the sodium salt of the above monohydric alcohols, or (c) by ester interchange, e.g. between tetraethoxy silane and a monohydric alcohol as defined above. Specified starting materials are CH3SiCl3, (CH3)2SiCl2; CH3Si(OC2H5)3, (CH3)2Si(OC2H5)2, C6H5SiCl3 and C6H5C2 H4Si(OC2H5)3. R may be straight or branched chain alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, substituted or unsubstituted, the same or different and among those specified are methyl, iso-butyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl and tolyl. The compounds XH used to obtain radical X include monohydric aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and arylaliphatic alcohols, phenols, secondary amines, carboxylic acids or mono N-substituted carboxylic amides. Many are specified and include isooctanol, cresols, N:N dialkylethanolamines, N alkyl acetamides, butyric acid and lauric acid. When a above is an integer the copolymers may be random or block copolymers, the oxyalkylene residue of molecular weight of 250 to 3,000 containing at least 50% of oxyalkylene units containing at least 3 carbon atoms per unit. Polymers of compounds of formul <FORM:0887175/IV (a)/1> or <FORM:0887175/IV (a)/2> where one R is hydrogen and the other hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group, and R1 and R11 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or acyl groups, may be prepared by polymerizing the compounds, optionally together with other polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compounds, in bulk, aqueous or non-aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension in the presence of free radical polymerization catalysts, ultra violet light or atomic radiation. Lists of suitable comonomers, catalysts and dispersing agents are given and examples describe the polymerization of (1) benzoylmethacrylhydroxamic acid in dioxane in the presence of benzoin and ultra violet light; (2) methacrylhydroxamic acid and methyl methacrylate in xylene in the presence of azo diisobutyronitrile; benzoylacrylhydroxamic acid and methyl methacrylate in water in the presence of ammonium persulphate, sodium metabisulphite and (3) sodium lauryl sulphate and (4) sodium oleyl sulphate; and (5) benzoylacrylhydroxamic acid and ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate or butyl methacrylate in water in the presence of ammonium persulphate, sodium metabisulphite and sodium oleyl sulphate. The polymers may be converted by heating to polymers containing isocyanate groups which may be cross-linked by reacting with polyamines, e.g. decamethylene diamine or di-(6-aminohexyl)-amine. They may be used in thermosetting coating compositions and for binding pigments to textiles. Specifications 852,100 and 887,176 are referred to.

Textile-finishing agents are provided by compounds of the formula (Rf).sub.m --A-- (X).sub.n wherein Rf represents a fluorocarbon chain, A represents a linking group, X represents a sulphonazide or azidoformate group and m and n are integers. The Rf group may be a linear or branched fluorocarbon chain containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, and the linking group A may be a simple organic linking group or it may be a macromolecular linking group. The simple linking groups may have one or more fluorocarbon chains and one or more azido groups attached thereto, while the macromolecular linking groups may have a considerable number of fluorocarbon and/or azido groups attached thereto.
