System and method for joint resurface repair

Номер: US6520964B2
Принадлежит: STD Manufacturing Inc

The present invention provides tools and methods for mapping and measuring the articular surface of a joint (or of any bony surface) and for fabricating a prosthetic device based on this recorded data. In one embodiment, once the defect of the chondral surface has been identified, a guide pin is inserted arthroscopically. A fixation screw is driven into the subchondral bone in relation to a reference axis that is approximately central to the defect, the fixation device also serving to define a tangent point to the surrounding articular surface. A further cylindrical proximal extension of the screw that eventually serves as a fixation element for the surface prosthetic is concealed with a cover or plug. The depth positioning of the cover or plug establishes an origin or reference point for all future measuring, cutting, and prosthetic machining operations. A measuring tool having a static post that establishes the axial location of origin is inserted on the reference axis. By rotating the outer arm or outrigger of the measuring tool relative to the static post while also maintaining contact with the articular surface, an axial displacement or Z dimension is established relative to the origin for any point along the known radial sweep of the outrigger to determine the final geometry of the prosthetic surface which fits within the defect. Data recorded during the mapping procedure is entered into parametric engineering design software or similar algorithm to define a three dimensional surface matched to the bearing surface geometry to be implanted and reproduce the anatomic contours mapped.

System for assigning discrete time periods for dye applicators in a textile dyeing apparatus

Номер: US5136520A

Принадлежит: Milliken Research Corp

A control system for a textile dying apparatus processes and distributes digitally encoded pattern information. A substrate is moved on a path along which the surface of the substrate comes into operative range of a plurality of arrays arranged along the path of the substrate. Each of the arrays has a plurality of individual dye applicators capable of selectively projecting a stream of dye onto a predetermined portion of the substrate corresponding to a pattern element in a pattern composed of a pattern element matrix with a plurality of pattern elements in each of a plurality of pattern rows. Each pattern element is associated with a visually distinct pattern area. The dye applicators project dye for a time period determined by the pattern information. The method first determines a set of initial values. From the initial values it generates a firing command matrix having, for each dye applicator in each array, a firing command sequence corresponding to the pattern element to which that dye applicator may apply dye in each pattern row. Finally, the method allocates, for simultaneous transmission to each dye applicator in each array, the firing command sequence in the firing command matrix corresponding to the pattern element in the pattern row to be applied to the predetermined portion of the substrate that is passing within operative range of the dye applicator at the time of transmission. <IMAGE>

Direct-patterned optical waveguides on amorphous silicon films

Номер: US6925216B2
Принадлежит: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

An optical waveguide structure is formed by embedding a core material within a medium of lower refractive index, i.e. the cladding. The optical index of refraction of amorphous silicon (a-Si) and polycrystalline silicon (p-Si), in the wavelength range between about 1.2 and about 1.6 micrometers, differ by up to about 20%, with the amorphous phase having the larger index. Spatially selective laser crystallization of amorphous silicon provides a mechanism for controlling the spatial variation of the refractive index and for surrounding the amorphous regions with crystalline material. In cases where an amorphous silicon film is interposed between layers of low refractive index, for example, a structure comprised of a SiO 2 substrate, a Si film and an SiO 2 film, the formation of guided wave structures is particularly simple.
