In the biological treatment of organic matter for the purpose of producing compost, soil amendments or bio-fuel it is known that in order to ensure aerobic conditions during the entire treatment process air has to be channeled through the organics to provide for a sufficient oxygen level and to remove excess heat. It is also known that during the bio-chemical breakdown of the cell-structure of the organics moisture is released, which has to be removed to prevent parts of the organics turning into an un-aerobic process stage. The present invention provides a means to aerate organic matter and to collect and remove liquid from organic matter via a specifically designed channel. The channel contains a pipe comprising multiple orifices for air distribution or removal. The top of the channel is closed with a removable perforated cover. One or more than one channel combined to a series form an aeration system. The channels of an aeration system are integrated into the floor of a bin-type reactor and connected via pipes to a manifold outside the reactor for air distribution or removal. These pipes are also connected to the liquid collection and removal system comprised of a pipe outside the reactor, which directs collected liquid to storage or treatment tanks. Airflow in the channels, pipes and manifold is maintained by an air distribution system comprised of an exhauster/blower and regulated by means of dampers or valves. All process air is exhausted via a biologically active filter material in a bio-filter bed for odor control purposes. All liquid is collected and processed.

Expanded polystyrene is in commercial use since more than 50 years. During this period the unique properties of the material lead to the utilisation of expanded polystyrene within a vast range of industrial and commercial areas. The most noticeable properties are light-weight, high--volume, high thermal energy insulation factors, excellent shock absorption and close to unlimited formability. The continuously increasing amount of end of life expanded polystyrene resulting from its wide range of applications is leading progressively to challenges in waste disposal facilities. Especially high tech landfills face the loss of large amounts of expensive disposal space due to the high volume and low weight properties of the material, which is not or only minimal compactable with on-site compaction methods. Adding to this challenge is the requirement to dispose of the end of life expanded polystyrene close to the point of generation because the light-weight high-volume properties do not allow the transportation over longer distances, preventing the shipment to centralised recovery and recycling facilities. The invention provides a method to volume reduce expanded polystyrene, especially the end of life expanded polystyrene at the point of generation or close to it by introducing a volume reduction method and utilising mechanical process equipment, which is designed to reduce the volume of the expanded polystyrene to the original volume before expansion. The mechanical process equipment is designed and build in such a way that clean or soiled, spent expanded polystyrene can be introduced into the process equipment were it is dissolved and homogenised by means of industrial solvent. A mechanical, gravity based cleaning and contaminant separation process to purify the volume reduced paste like liquid mixture is part of the invention. The tunnel cover 20 has an opening 29 through which the fan 21 blows air. This increases the static pressure at the cover 20, which change the direction of air at a desired direction. One of the advantages of the invention is that the tunnel cover 20 makes it possible to utilise considerably smaller mobile fans 21 to ventilate a tunnel 1 in the event of fire or emission of gases than when using earlier known techniques.
