Detergent compositions comprise a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula <FORM:0899144/III/1> wherein X is an anion such as Cl-, Br-or CH3SO4-, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and Y are branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbon radicals and Y may also be a hydrogen atom, and wherein one or two of the hydrocarbon radicals contain at least 8 carbon atoms and the radicals R3 and R4 may be part of a ring system (see Group IV(b)), in combination with a detergent, preferably of the non-ionogenic type. In an example a composition comprising N-dodecylsulphonylaminopropyl - N - carboxymethyl - dimethylammonium chloride and the adduct of 10 mols. ethylene oxide with 1 mol. p-nonylphenol, is described.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0899144/IV (b)/1> wherein X is an anion such as Cl-, Br- or CH3SO4-, R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are unbranched or branched, saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbon radicals and Y is hydrogen or an unbranched or branched, saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or hydroaromatic hydrocarbon radical, wherein one or two of the hydrocarbon radicals contain at least 8 carbon atoms and the radicals R3 and R4 optionally form part of a ring system. The compounds are prepared by treating a diamine containing at least one reactive hydrogen atom such as 1-amino-3-dimethylaminopropane with a sulphochloride, e.g. dodecyl sulphochloride or benzenesulphochloride, followed by reaction with a halocarboxylic acid such as chloracetic acid. The products are used as active agents in disinfectant and detergent compositions (see Groups III and VI).ALSO:Disinfectant compositions comprise a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula <FORM:0899144/VI/1> wherein X is an anion such as Cl-, Br- or CH3So4-, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and Y are branched or unbranched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, aromatic, ...
